Fighter with spells

Maybe I should simply play a cleric and mentally do away with the 'cleric is automatically sanctioned by his god' part?

Per the SRD, you can play a cleric without following any god. Just pick whatever 2 domains best fit your character. IMHO a fighter/cleric is more similar in style to a paladin than a fighter/sorcerer and you don't have to worry about Arcane Spell Failure.

If a cleric is not devoted to a particular deity, he still selects two domains to represent his spiritual inclinations and abilities.

How about a cleric of Helm or Tempus? They are more "martial" in aspect than "beautific."

You could also be a Cleric of Hoar the Doombringer, rather than Tyr.

Yep, 'Insightful Strike' at 3rd level. That is in addition to any strength bonus.
