Fighters gaining attribute bonus?

I've been working on the classes lately, making a few minor adjustments and I'd like to give something extra to the fighter. I was considering the idea of them gaining a bonus to their attributes (str, dex and con anyway) at various levels.

What do people think? What progression would you use?

I don't think they are underpowered as is, so unless you are giving something to other classes as is then I would say don't do it. You could give them fighter specific feats though that they could take to increase their attributes.

Take a look at Midnight 2Ed's Heroic Paths. They're halfway between classes and templates.

Each PC takes one, and each Path gives 20 levels worth of benefits- feats, attribute or skill bonuses, powers, etc.

While, technically, they give something to each & every PC in a game, several of them are feat heavy & combat oriented. Personally, I'm thinking about adopting them as a feature for all of my fantasy D20 games, regardless of actual system.

I believe the best way to make fighters stronger, without sacrificing any back-compatibility, is and has always been to design more powerful fighter-only feats.

Sadly, very few books have even tried that route, and when they tried they didn't do a good job.
