There's no facing in 3E / 3.5; there's also no such thing as a backstab in 3E / 3.5. So, what you're suggesting just doesn't work, mechanically.

You could get a sneak attack if you somehow were able to deny your opponent his Dex bonus to AC; AFAIK, while you can trip an opponent with a whip (thus making him prone), there's no way to use a whip to deny your opponent his Dex bonus. (Happy to be proven wrong, of course.)

How about a whip that does Dex damage? :uhoh:

Yeah, I don't think there's a way, but you can get SA damage for flanking or something. Or Feint.

I'm pretty sure Feint works with whips. That would deny some Dex for a sneak attack. There's also hiding, invisibility, and high initiative, although less useful.

Is a prone character not subject to sneak attacks?

and kind of off topic, a hill giant under the influence of hold person would be subject to sneak attack, right?

No, just -4 AC (or +4 vs ranged).

Yes, is considered paralysed and helpless.

Actually no, as Hold Person does not affect hill giants (it only works on creatures of the Humanoid type--hill giants are of the Giant type). Now Hold Monster would produce the effect you are looking for...

Wow, that's good to know. I didn't even think of that when they used it on the hill giant. Oh well, what's done is done and next time I'll know.
And knowing is half the battle!

It'd be cool if you researched a spell with your whip as a focus that affected a creature was with Hold Monster or something. Then it'd work.
