Figurine of Wondrous Power as an Animal Companion

I run a Planescape game and I am seeing problems in the future for the Ranger's Wolf Animal Companion travelling with the party on various planes. I don't want the party to have to leave the thing behind and try to pick it up later because that's going to be very hard in this campaign.

So I thought about giving her a Figurine of Wondrous Power so she can summon the animal when she wants.

What would something like this be valued at in terms of gold? I have no idea how to create this thing. Is this overpowered for a 7th lvl Ranger? It would need to level just like a regular Wolf Companion. Are there already Wolf Figurines in any books?

Just as long as it's not a panther!

Well, the Ranger does own the Bow of the Black Archer (Drow Killer). So maybe she can slay a certain Drow Ranger & gain an animal companion figurine that way. She'll be a hero to the entire online community :p

Why not just give it the Paladin treatment?

Once per day, as a full-round action, a paladin may magically call her mount from the celestial realms in which it resides. This ability is the equivalent of a spell of a level equal to one-third the paladin’s level. The mount immediately appears adjacent to the paladin and remains for 2 hours per paladin level; it may be dismissed at any time as a free action. The mount is the same creature each time it is summoned, though the paladin may release a particular mount from service.

Frankly, just give it to 'em for free. It's not a balance issue, and it's not giving them an ability they already had, it's just making some of the logistics easier for both the group and the DM.

Put in some side quest to get the figurine or totem or whatever, and let it slide from there.

The Paladin idea is interesting. I didn't think of that.

I guess there isn't a reason to think of this as being a part of character wealth since the PC already has the companion. The only difference is that it wouldn't be able to die unless the figurine is broken (I think that's how they work right?).

I suppose I should allow it to be summoned and released infinite times per day since a normal companion would be around 24/7. I'll require that it needs to be in figurine form for 8 hours per day to rest.

She'll be hunting her first Drow soon for the first Legacy Item test. I may go ahead and have her hunt a ranger drow carrying this item. But just so they don't make fun of the similarity to Drizzt, I'll name this evil Drow Ranger Tzzird Do'Burden.

You could run it the other way and have a magical device that "Itemizes" the animal companion into a figurine, so if it does die in combat, it is dead. (I'm not a fan of having a "not staying dead" animal companion)

Seconded.

Functionally just have the figurine be able to store and retrieve the companion. In all other ways, it's still the standard creature. Kill it and it's dead. On the up side, if you get a new companion, the figurine'd work just as well on them as it did on the previous animal.

Hmm...

Collar of Elhonna

This green collar can only be applied to a living creature with the animal type. On command (by anyone), collar and wearer shrink and morph into a small statuette, easily portable. While so shrunk, the wearer of the collar is mostly in a state of suspended animation, needing neither food nor air nor water, yet still gains the benefits of resting. However, if the statue is broken, the wearer of the collar is killed, and the magic of the collar is gone.
