[film] The Mothman Prophecies

Hand of Vecna

First Post
I saw this last night, and I absolutely loved it! The acting was good, the facts were fairly right-on, and the suspense... man, this really was a great film (no matter what the critics say). I highly reccomend it, but I'm not going to give away anything...

My one complaint was the audience members, but that's not a fault of the movie....

Oh, also, there was a preview for Resident Evil which looked quite good!!!

I want to see this movie. I'm glad it's good. Have you read any of the stories it's based on? Do a search for the Mothman. It'll come up with a lot of weird stuff about aliens and men in black. Pretty interesting actually. :)

Now, before anyone gets upset, I haven't seen this movie and if it is a great flick, I think that's wonderful and I'm glad people have enjoyed it.

That said, one thing about this film bothers me - in the advertising they say it is 'based on a true story'. It bugs the heck out of me when some supernatural nonsense is hyped up to be a 'true story'. Like the Exorcist or Amnityville. Both great movies, but both have as the only thing 'real' about them the fact that they are based on 100% pure B.S..

I often wonder why it takes a fantasy gamer to point out fantasy from reality... ;)

Altalazar:

If someone did a movie on the Roswell "crash" and included aliens in the story as one element of an otherwise 100% factual tale, they could still say "based on a true story," as its basis IS a true story.

But don't discount such things as exorcisms and the supernatural as always being BS. I like to leave my options open in that dept, and I personally know a couple of priests who have been involved in bona fide exorcisms.

Yeah, that's fine. But the movie ads don't even claim to be based on a true story; they claim its based on true "events" I figure that when even the studio's unwilling to claim that there's an actual true story behind their movie, then it probably amounts to "some people died, and another guy said it was going to happen"

Heh. Just a pet peeve, is all.

Another is when they get science totally wrong in movies. Especially when it would be so easy to get it right.

That's what made Contact so awesome - all of the science was solid, even the speculative science.

Impossible. At least if you refer to Catholic Preists. There has not been a church sanctioned excorcism since the 1600's or so. I am sure that there have been rogue priests doing it without sanction from Rome. But then they aren't "bona fide exorcisms" now are they?

Roman Catholic, my friend. There are still church sanctioned exorcisms. However, it is not just duled out like it was back then. There is a heirarchy of interviews that must be followed before such a ritual is offered. The last interview is a Cardinal, who has to find the case important enough to actually do it. Needless to say, it is rare, but there usually is an exorcism or two every decade. It's just not broadcast over the public news or anything.

However, there are hundreds of candidates; they usually are just proved to be liars, and told to go home by one of the priests in that Vatican Department which seeks out miracles (don't rmember its name).
