Finally! Funniest . . . Movie . . . Evar is on DVD

Airplane definitely for me as well. I have to have seen the movie like a hundred times and I'm still noticing little jokes and gags in scenes that I've never noticed before.

I loved Gods Must Be Crazy, and saw it about 6 times in the theatre in high school. Years later someone told me that the film had actually been a propaganda vehicle for the South African government, the theme being that the nice, niave black people should stay out in the bush, and not trouble their little heads with civilization and white man stuff. I don't know if this is true, but it left a funny aftertaste in my mouth after that.

The South African government had nothing to do with the movie.

Eh, my vote is for The Naked Gun -- the first one, that is. Airplane is a front runner too. The Gods Must Be Crazy is a funny movie and all, but not really in the same league.

And for a little more esoteric comedy that's always been a favorite of mine, I'd also throw out the dark horse The Court Jester.

mmm Danny Kaye, easily one of the best D&D inspiring movies as well.

on the personal anecdote level, Airplane was so funny to me as a kid that I literaly almost suffocated laughing while watching it clandestinely one night.

The fan scene,(you know which one), had me spitting up my drink, cracking up, choking on the remants of my drink, and expelling all my oxygen through ribald laughter, and then silent attempts to laugh, and lots of side holding.

Luckily I awoke a parental unit, who came downstairs and slapped me on the back before I laughed to death,(or at least felt like it).

I was grounded, but at least got to finish the movie.

I'm very glad to hear that. As I said, the person who told me was conveying a rumor, so I've never been sure. Now I can go back to enjoying the movie, unencumbered by political guilt.
