Finding that darn guild

This doesn’t really fall under “rules” but it is a disagreement about the game. I know it may seem pointless but this has been brought up enough that I want it cleared up.

Our DM loves to constantly retail the story of how I asked a town guard where the thieves’ guild was located. Well I want to give a short recalling of that conversation to see if anyone buys this hoax of a story. This was 2nd edition by the way

First let me set the stage. The party had just gotten to a major city and everyone was going off to do their own thing. I was playing a thief, and I was a new player, so I mistakenly believed that all thieves new where the guild was. The conversation went like this.

Me: Where is the thieves’ guild?
DM: I don’t know, why don’t you ask that guard over there?
Me: (Thinking that was a joke) Where is the thieves’ guild?
DM: Ok, the guard arrests you and takes you away.
Me: I didn’t ask the guard where it was!
DM: I said, “Why don’t you ask that guard”
Me: I thought you were joking.
DM: Well apparently I wasn’t.

The DM and I aren’t in disagreement on what was said. We both agree the previous conversation was how it happened. What we are disagreeing on is what was meant by my words. Would anyone hearing that conversation take the DM’s side? Even if he made an honest mistake, the second I corrected him he should have said, “Oh, sorry, I thought you asked the guard.” Or do you guys actually believe the DM was right in what he did and in his version of the story

As a DM, I would have assumed you asked the guard too, but when corrected, would have laughed about it and forgotten the entire thing happened.

Why is this in the rules forum?

As a DM, the guard would have loved and kicked you with some buddy guards into the next pile of rubbish. Who could take such a dude seriously enough to throw him into jail? Morons get kicked into the dirt.

The worst thing the guard might assume is that he's the target of a joke.

Agreed. No guard is going to bother to take someone in for asking where the thieves guild is. Heck, depending on the particular city, some guards will actually be able to give you directions :)

 for the right price... if you don't pay enough, he leads you into the lane of knives.

Your character might be a thief hunter

My response would be to embarrass the guard as a staunch thief hunter until you get out of town.

Have you're other party members petition to release the great hunter and punish the evil guard who is obviously in the guild's employ. If you can slander the guard enough it out to be possible to get your char out and punish the guard at the same time. You just asked after the guild - you didn't say why you wanted the information.

On the other hand, perhaps your dm needs you to have a prison encounter ?

Trying to come up with the guards reaction is a bit pointless, the entire point of my complaint is that i never asked him in the first place. I was speaking to the DM. Just look at the facts.

1. at the time I was a new player and thought all theives knew where the guild was. Why would my character ask a question if I assumed he already new the answer.

2. anyone sitting at the table would have made the same assumtion I did. That the DM was joking about a guard.

3. most important of all. The words "I ask the guard" never game out of my mouth. He didnt even ask "are you asking the guard for directions?" Assumtion is the mother of all mistakes, and to assume I asked the guard, despite the fact I never said I did, was a mistake

A DM should not be saying this in the first place unless it is a joke.

Unless your group has an acknowledged no-take-backs rule, where everything that is said is what happens, then no one should be a hard case about it.

As for what the DM actually did, welcome to being disliked by a DM. The only thing I can come up with is that you are being encouraged to leave the group, because otherwise your description makes your DM sound amateurish and about twelve years old.

Give him a chance. I was 12 years old too and committed a lot of crimes against good gaming

Well, I was just speculating on insufficient information. My first DMing was when I was 11 . . . and . . . ouch . . . it wasn't pretty.
