Finished Red Hand of Doom (spoilers)

There was no cheating. Apparently the module specifically says all that stuff, including the horribly unfair "silence that only affects the good guys" effect.

Silence is one spell effect that can be tied to a (un)hallow spell. Duration is one year, and can be keyed to affect all creatures that don't share your alignment/faith. That's probably what was going on here. Completely rules-legal.

You're right! wow.

Never realized how nasty that is. Surprised it hasn't shown up in Living Greyhawk, home of "screw the players" encounters :)

Impossible . . . physics. Hurt . . . brain!

So it's silent only for us. So if I talk, I make no sound, and I can't hear anything. But if the bad guys talk, they do make sounds, and they can hear things. But apparently I can't hear the bad guys if they talk, and the bad guys can't hear us if we try to talk.

Where do the sound waves go?!

If it made us deaf, that'd be one thing. But it's apparently surrounding each and every one of us in a field of null sound that affects only us. I think we should have gotten a save to resist, but apparently by the rules, we don't, because it was an area effect.

An area effect that only affected the good guys.

Just like unholy blight. Bah.

Still, it was a fun ending.

My own game is just starting in on chapter 3 right now.

I am not sure I will end this as written yet. But I am sure that if I do opt to have the Aspect of Tiamat show up, that there will be plenty of Monologuing "Insolent mortals, I am going to kill you. blah blah blah, I really mean it, blah blah blah, prepare to die". I will make it obvious that the PC's are not quite meant to attack this thing directly, at least not right now. Or if they are, I will find a way to slip them a Dragonlance, or have an excuse to save their asses.

The adventure is written in a way that assumes that the next thing to happen after the end would be for the players to find a way to kill the Aspect. If you do not want to do that, use a different ending. I suggest a Scooby Doo ending where AzarKhul is really Norro Wistan wearing a mask.

END COMMUNICATION

The best suggestion I heard was to have the PCs go to the Fane as 'act four,' and to have the Aspect fly away to reinforce the army when it attacks the city as 'act five.' Basically swap act four and five. Oh, and have the General of the Horde be the main boss, rather than the priest of Tiamat. I mean, c'mon, people want to fight the red dragon last, don't they?

The General of the Horde can be riding the Aspect of Tiamat.

Umm... A wizard did it. Really.

I agree that the effect is hideously unfair, especially when you consider how dependent on magic the players often become at that point in the game. Mechanically, it is not that hard to overcome though. The Silent Spell Metamagic feat on a Dispel Magic will probably be enough to get past it. Or a Wand of Dispel Magic (The rules do not say that a wand cannot work in a Silenced area). And the players can always try to retreat and regroup.

There are plenty of things that are nasty in this game unless the players are at least partially prepared to handle them. Improved Invisibility + Fly is at the top of that list for me. I had a spell caster neutralized in Round 1 of a fight by a Silence spell, and had to fall back on a Wand.

You can't say the command word (which many magic items require) if you're silenced.

Yup, RAW you can't use wands in silence zones. But I have long since allowed wands to be a think and point based deal that works in a silence zone. This greatly negates the the Ubernes of silence.

There are several unhallowed areas in RttToEE. Can't remember if any are tied to silence. But I have used silence on an air elemental which is quite deadly.

Really, if you guys were expecting a fight at the top of the chute you should have buffed beforehand.
