Fire Seeds

When choosing the Holly Berry version it says you can throw them up to 5 feet. Do you throw them all or can you only throw 1 per round? It is very unclear but being able to throw them all would allow a 17th level caster to do 8d8 + 136 HP of damage. How have you adjudicated this in your game?

Being individual weapons, you can only throw one at a time (you can't, for instance, throw two daggers at once in the same hand). Treat them like any other weapons. The real kicker is that they do not blow up until you use a standard action to activate them. They pretty much suck as thrown weapons.

OK, I can see them being individually thrown. Are sure about the activation though? Touch spells generally let you cast the spell and attack in the same round (as well as move if need be). So, wouldn't it be cast the spell, toss the bomb and say the command word all in one round. Range is touch so why not?

Speaking a command word is a standard action. The caster can touch the holly berries as part of the spell, but can't also throw them as part of the spell. He could drop them as a free action though and then activate them next round. At best, it would take two rounds to use fire seeds.

Well see, the holly berry bombs last 10 mins/level. So if you have them made before hand, in combat you could just drop them all at once and speak the command word (make sure you specify the same command word for each of the 8 bombs).

So yes, this use of fire seeds can get ridiculously overpowered. Fire resistance counts seperatly against each, but if your opponents don't have fire resistance... Its one of those things better left unabused to make for a more fun game.

Actually, it starts out ridiculously overpowered and just gets worse. I've noticed that using divine spellpower really cranks the damage up there (on a sun domain cleric). Beads of karma make it even more hideous (of course, they make everything hideous). Worse yet, a rod of empower spell or empower spell itself knocks the damage description up to insane. (I've seen an entire group of 16th level bad guys finished off by a single empowered, karma-beaded fire seeds--pretty anti-climactic).

And if one casting won't do it, you can always cast it a few times at once, then drop the resulting bombs all together ;)

I think the acorn version is alot better thought out, overall.
