Given that, as I recall, the crew didn't have Wash's body? Yeah, he shows up some time later with a bunch of cybernetic organs to replace what got obliterated, and his behavior a little... off (which is totally in Tudyk's wheelhouse) and you're off to the races.

I think we’re better off looking to soaps, rather than sci-fi, for inspiration. Slap a goatee on him, say he’s an evil twin, and call it a day.

Given that Book is coming back as well, I'd bet on the animated show focusing on the period between the show and the movie.

So you want to bring in the evil twin before Wash’s death? Well, it’s unusual but hardly unprecedented. Twice the Tudyk, twice the fun! (Fourdyk?)

They have explicitly stated that they will be working between the series and movie. I mused about eventually reaching beyond that because canonically there's like 6 or 8 months of time in there, which is a pretty hard limit.

As the animated series is set in between the TV series and the film, this also gives them the perfect opportunity to lay the ground work for the return of Wash after the film. If they do, I just hope they aren’t too heavy handed with it.

Also, this is currently just one more series (so far) and so I’m not sure how much transformational character growth you would expect over that time - even if the film didn’t exist.

Certainly other shows have managed to keep the romantic elements of “will they/wont they” last for far more than two series.

So I’m cautiousness optimistic …

I got a chance to meet Ron Glass at the autograph table at Dragon Con. I walked up as he was about to step away for a bathroom break. He offered to sign one for me real quick, but I declined. I didn't want to seem rude (southern gentleman and all). He was really nice. I wish now I had the autograph, but I have the memory of meeting him. Sorry for the aside, just felt like sharing.
