Firefly RPG?!?!?

But it's barely sci-fi, even using the definition Jamie uses in the quote above!

That is, of course, the problem. What type of sci-fi would this hypothetical RPG be? Hard? Sci-Fantasy? The problem with sci-fi is that everyone wants different things from it.

the movies are barely sci fi, but there were some really good sci fi supplements that came out for the game.

Firefly would be closer to hard sci fi then sci-fantasy. Other then the hinted at psionic abilites everything in it was good sci fi.

A lot like Fantasy. :)

See, I don't think so. And, indeed, neither do a lot of other people. There are definite established archetypes for mainstream fantasy - demihumans, magic, dragons, psuedo-medieval/feudal governemntal systems etc.

Spaceships are pretty much the only constant in sci-fi, and not even then.

According to earlier comments on rpg.net by some folks involved with the game's production, it'll be its own system. Eden's system is still Eden-proprietary, and this game's being put out by Margaret Weis Productions.

If by Whedon you mean Joss Whedon the Buffy guy my guess is it will be in Eden's system.
It would be scary to see a creator's entire body of work licensed by a company.

Aliens, lasers, future tech, alien planets

ya, they aren't in all sci fi, but a lot of it

I still say that those aren't nearly as prevelent as the tropes of fanasy. Also some of those are getting less and less by the year. Lasers for example.

From a certain point of view. [/Obi-Wan]

Really, it just comes down to how you look that things. There is as much diversity in fantasy as there is in Scifi from what I've seen. :)
