Firefly (spoilers) (11/08)

Crothian

First Post
Another good episode. I think they are getting stronger as time goes one, maybe the series won't get canned as fast as we all think.

One of the good things about this episode is that it sparked my interest in two characters who weren't so interesting to me, earlier.

The preacher seems to have a more interesting past than I expected, given the way the Alliance treated him. Any guesses as to what his deal is? He's important enough for them to know, but he's not someone that the Alliance is hunting for (or else they would have kept him).

And seeing River do her savant-like quasi-psychic you-can't-possibly-know-that thing was really cool. Her freaky insight is far more interesting than Lorne (the demon who reads the future from your singing) in Angel, or Cordy's psychic flashes.

Also, Jayne cracks me up. First thing he does after take-off is start going through the doc's things, then once they save him, he's dumping it back. Gotta love him.

They've been hinting on the Preacher for a while. I think he was secret police or something like that. He knows about the seedy side of things, but gets respect from the Alliance.

My vote is for some sort of ex-cop or undercover agent of some sort.

I'm not surprised they're keeping plenty of character secrets. I'm a little surprised that they are being quite so blatant about teh fact that there is a secret, though. Usually, I'd expect Joss to hint until it was really relevant, rather than whomp you on the head and point a figer and say, "Here is something you don't know!".

Refreshing, actually :D Especially if they now let it lie for a long time.

'Dear diary, today I was pompas, my sister was crazy and we got kidnapped by hillbillies. It was the bestest day ever.'-Jayne

By far the best line in any of the shows!

Unless Joss is leading us in one direction, and once we think we've got it figured out, he's going to pull the rug from under us.

If Book, the preacher, is working for the Alliance, though, then we're left with the question, what is he up to? Why hasn't he reported River to the Alliance? Or maybe he has, and he's been assigned to observe her, which is a definite possibility.

I liked the contrast centered on the doctor this episode.

On one side, there's the Doc's father, who disowned him basically to avoid embarassment and losing his social position. His own son.

Captain Reynolds came back across the system, way the hell out of his way, to get the Doc and River, because the Doc is part of his crew. Kaylee may have been right at the beginning of the episode, that the Doc looked down on them and their life, but not at the end.

In another thread, someone said that they felt Firefly was different from Joss's other shows, Angel and Buffy, which are about heros. I think he's wrong. Mal is a hero. Reluctant, but real.

THis really was the Doctor's show. We got some great insight into his character and by the previews next week we get a little more.

Mal might not be a hero, but he is loyal. I really liked that discussion he had with the doctor at the end. Being part of the crew was what was important, more important then personal feelings.

Not just loyal- he's good, in a way Jayne (for example) isn't. In the first episode, when he found out what he was stealing for that old russian guy, he broke the deal and returned the medicine.

He did what was right under those circumstances, I don't think that makes him a hero. He has hero potential, but I don't think he's there yet.
