Wow no one has mentioned the official Google toolbar.

I see no point in installing it since Firefox comes with the Google search box in the top right-hand corner by default.

You definitely need the alt-tag popup enhancement I mention in the other thread. Fantastic for browsing Enworld.

Got it now, but I don't troll EN World that much (look at my post count here), so I may end up uninstalling it. I broke one trolling habit at IGN, I don't need another

The absolute essentials for me are:

- Adblock (use it to block ads from even appeaing on a page)
- Download Manager Tweak (Allows more download manager options, as well as opeing the download manager in a sidebar)
- PRGoogleBar (Adds a Google Toolbar with far more options than the default search box)
- Tabbrowser Preferences (gives you more control over how Tabs are used)

There are also a few I find incredibly useful, but wouldn't classify as "essential":

- ForecastFox (shows you weather conditions and forcast in your status bar)
- infoRSS (view RSS feeds in a scrolling ticker at the bottom of your Firefox window - great for keeping up-to-date on news, including the latest in EN World)

Can you tell me more about PRGooglebar, infoRSS, and Download Manager Tweak?

Basically I am looking for anything that can speed my internet browsing, as I am on a sub 56k connection, and looking for creative ways to do so (like bloglines).

Yay Firefox extentions!

I like:

ForecastFox: The local wether on your browser. Easily my favorite extention, as I have this nasty habit of going outside once in a while.

Adblock: Just having a pop-up blocker is no fun. This is interactive! [soupnazivoice]No more ads from you![/soupnazivoice]

Gmail Notifier: I loves my Gmail, and I loves more knowing when I haves my Gmail.

Image Zoom: Useful? Nah, not really. Cool? You betcha! Any image on your browser can be increased or decreased in size from 10 to 400%. Fun for the whole family!

Mozilla Calender: What to say, it's a calender. Now I can leave the SI Swimsuit calender beside my PC unmarked. Now how's that a bad thing??

You do realize, of course, that the efficiency of your Internet connection depends as much on the throughput as on your ping, for example. Webpages are hard to optimize because they can ping many servers (even if you exclude ads).

I have a miserable 56k as well and there's not much that can be done to speed up loading En World (as an example) except for disabling unneccessary graphics. I wish you could control the amount of threads per forum page.

My Extensions

This is what I have and I LOVE IT.

Image Zoom - Adds zoom functions for pics.

Adblock - Filters ads from web pages. Click and get rid of it.

IEView - Lets you right click and "open in IE". Firefox is very unforgiving on code...sometimes things are written incorrectly and looks funny in Firefox. This lets you open it in IE.

downTHEMall! - Lets you download multiple files on a page at once.

Dictionary Search - Highlight a word and right click...gives you defintion.

Tabbrowser Preferences - Enhances your control over your browser...really don't see much of a difference actually.

BugMeNot - Bypass web registrations like at www.washingtonpost.com for example.

I must not fear! - For a Bene Gesserit fix when you need it.

Gmail Notifier - Essestial if you have gmail.

miniT - Enable you to to drag tabs around and organize them. Best download ever!

stumbleupon - Great way to find new web sites.

Can you tell me more about PRGooglebar, infoRSS, and Download Manager Tweak?

PRGoogleBar adds a toolbar similar to the Google Toolbar in IE (as far as I've found, there is no official Google Toolbar for Firefox). It allows you to search Google (and other services such a Dictionary.com) directly from the bar. It also saves a history of your most recent searches.

InfoRSS is a RSS feed reader directly within Firefox. It allows you to add RSS feeds, which will then display at in the statusbar in various ways (scrolling, fade-in/fade-out). The Feeds will display the headline, and you can click them to be taken directly to the article. For more info, check the author's page at: http://inforss.mozdev.org/

Download Manager simply extends the functionality of Firefox's default download manager. You can set the DL Manager to open in the sidebar or even a new tab.
