Firemans Alchemy.

Fire was a real horror in the real medieval world.. The number of stories of dragon attacks in england were probably a result of this terror (and invading torch carrying norseman in row as rivers of fire).

The fantasy world of D&D really seems like it ought to have some fireman tools there seem to be a spell/sorcery or two.. but is alchemy completely lacking (i may be blind).

I was kind of expecting some analog to modern co2 spray effects, I suppose I could just make something up?

Perhaps somebody already has?

It certainly seems like something which would make a sensible practical application of magic in a fantasy world. Some sort of alchemical item that would put out fire in a burst 1 for instance. There isn't anything official that I know of unless it was slipped in somewhere in one of the magazine articles. Should be simple enough to come up with. Make it an attack vs FORT with a burst 1 and if the attack hits, the fire goes out and no fire will start or spread into that area for 1 round. Should be a pretty simple low level item.

Thanks ...I feel like I havent really digested the implications of Alchemy. There is something in my head that says people aren't following on the implications of magic from cultural/anthropological point of views... and neglecting practical magic is a definite sign.

Feeling really silly... I read the Affect Normal Fires ritual more closely.... keeping that equipped daily ought to make a fair city fire marshal.

I agree, but I think you had a legitimate idea there with your Alchemical fire-fighting item.

Especially during seiges where your ritual caster might be doing way more important things than fire-control, like scrying or healing. Arming a couple peasant bridages with a few pouches of "Uncle Oswald's Patented Alchemical Fire-eater Powder" makes a whole lot more sense.

Granted we cant all be ritualists... and yes the volunteer levy and all the folk who join in need good tools buckets and wells did rather poor historically and you dont want to have to bother weather witches to call down a drenching rain every time some building gets on fire.
