First D&D/RPG Experience

Long ago, I had been wanting D&D badly...even tried to write the whole thing down when I barrowed a friend's copy but gave up.

I can't remember if it was my 17th or 18th birthday. I was working part time at a nursing home in Dallas. When I got off, my mother picked me up and handed me the Holmes boxed set (I think that's right...the blue one with the Dragon on front). It had dice that you had to color in the numbers with a crayon.

It was the best birthday present I ever had. Later, I had to resort to hiding it under my bed because my dad caught onto idea that D&D was a bad influence from his church. I think this was before there was a nationwide push against it.

It wasn't too long before he realized it was just a game, but he still referred to it as: that...that...Dragons and Dungeons...yarrr

It was '77 or '78 (Don't recall). Holmes basic. My best friend and his older brother had spent their summer in Kansas and brought home this game called D&D.

I was playing a wizard (I think) second in the party. We were playing through B1, and I got grabbed by a mobile bush (as I recall), and the other wizard (higher level than me) used a fire spell on the bush (Burning Hand I think). Killed me.

Been hooked ever since. :)
