Tonight I'm going to start running 3.5 at a game store. I have no idea what kind of players will be showing up. I will have never met most of players before. Think I should do a total party kill to establish my authouty as DM?

I'm just kidding. I would not do that, unless the party does something TOTALLY stupid. ;)

What I always do with new people is I have them make new characters, taking an hour or so. Then, I take all their character sheets, arrange them in a neat little pile. After that, I suddenly start yelling at the top of my lungs "DIE! DIE! DIE!" all the while tearing up the sheets of paper. If I can foam at the mouth, even better. I eat the torn-up character sheets and spit it back at the players, all the while my limbs flailing and my torso bending at impossible angles. I do this for about another hour, then I calm down, the players roll up new characters, and we begin for real.

If you were running Call of Cthulhu then it might be okay but with D&D it's better to leave them standing at the end of their first session. You using pre-gen characters?

No, my own world, letting them roll up characters, starting them at first. First adventure is real basic. Have to get used to how they play, see what they bring in, ect..
