"First Edition Feel"

Quasqueton

First Post
There are at least two new game systems that claim something along the lines of "a 1st-Edition feel". There are some folks who house rule D&D [current edition] to give their campaign an AD&D1 feel.

My question:

Why not just play AD&D1?

It's snobbery, not genuine interest. :uhoh:

Okay, more seriously, I think it's just a matter of nostalgia. One remembers the wonder of excitment when he was young and the game was new to him. So, what he wants is to get again that feeling of old that may well be exaggerated. However, the 3e/d20/C&C whatever rules are much more fast and pleasant to use (at least to a majority of gamers), so who would like to use back this obsolete game system???

Because there are advantages to be had by taking newer rules and marrying them with some older concepts for those who liked some things about the old, but not all.

Analogy: Originally there were Motorola Bag Phones for portable phones. They were big, clunky, and had no battery life to speak of. However, they did place a phone call. Now, you have phones the size of credit cards, that take pictures, have screen savers and games, and ALMOST do everything but allow you to make a phone call. :) I don't need all that.

You say: "Why don't you just go back to using a Motorola Bag Phone from 15 years ago?"

Think of it from that perspective.

Because 3e allows for more character customization...

By my count from memory, not including the optional bard class, not including anything outside the core books (UA, OA, DLA, etc.), not including any human dual class options, and not including the optional psionic rules, I count 56 different race/class combinations allowed by the 1e rules.

That's always been enough for me to find something I wanted to play.

I'll spare everyone the cliched jokes about half-whatever paladin/assassins.

Oh, come now. It's been at least two weeks and I don't think we're going to hit our 2005 quota for that topic at the rate we've been going.
Ok, then:

"While they like the general structure of the rules, they don't like the videogame, dungeonpunk and wargame like aspects of d20. Specifically, they don't like the concepts of "leveling" (once or more a session), "taking a level" (as if learning a new character class is something done casually), "half-templated demon/drow/ninja/paladin/etc" character "concepts," and so on."

Because its easier to find players for 3e

Also "First edition feel, First Edition rules" kind of sucks as an advertising slogan.

Monster "looking for that RuneQuest2 feel" Mash
