First encounter area idea

What do you think of this as the first area in a dungeon?

To be read to the Players:
You descend the long flight of steps and arrive at a natural chamber about 70' wide and 50' deep. Your light glints off something on the far wall of the place. You see six weird faces carved from the walls around this cavern. Each face is beside a tunnel leading off in a different direction. The faces are strange and doleful looking, and each is slightly different from its fellows. There seems to be no relationship between the size of the passageway and the stony visage beside it. There are a few stalactites on the ceiling above, and a few fallen to the floor amid a handful of stalagmites.
Each of the carven faces has an animated mouth with a permanent magic mouth spell. When anyone comes within three feet of one of the faces, the mouth will move and it will say with a deep, mournfully dire tone: "Turn back. This is not the way." This will be repeated each time the same or another character comes within three feet. If characters attempt to speak with a visage, it will only repeat its warning. However, if the word "truth" is used in any question or demand, then each face will lie and state majestically: "My way is the right way." Only the face in the far southeast, beside the two-feet-wide passageway south, will say anything different. That mouth will say, "I watch the only way."

When a face speaks, any character making a Spot check DC 10 will notice something glittering within it. Each mouth has a gem in it (easily seen if a face is actively searched). The colors are, from left to right, amber, purple, pale blue, deep red, olive green, and dark pink. If anyone tries to reach into a mouth and take the gem, the mouth will bite for 1d10+2 damage. The stone faces have 8 hardness and 200 hit points.

If a character simply asks the face to stick out its tongue, or any similar request, the face will obey. The mouth will open, and say "Aaahhh." The gem will be on the tongue and can be taken easily. Regardless of which is taken first, the first gem is worth 1,000 gp. The others, although just as large, are flawed and worth only 100 gp each.

**********

Note: The adventurers can explore any of the tunnels with or without information from the stone faces -- the "wrong" tunnels merely lead to deadends or dangerous encounters. The "right" tunnel leads into the dungeon proper.
