I'm still a beginner, but I'm contemplating making d4 die roll NOT explode (the only die that wouldn't).
I know, I know - you're saying "what about unskilled checks, which are made a d4-2?". I don't think it will be a problem; you'll just want to be sure you use them in situations in your favor (equipment, circumstance or help from others in bonuses) to negate the penalty and have a chance at success.
