First impressions of D20 Call of Cthulu

Hey Gang,

Well unfortunately I have been able to scare up (he he he) a copy of the new book yet. For those of us who haven't seen it yet what do you think? I've heard that there is more of a slant toward CoC Modern rather than the classic 1920's settings. Is that true? How does the Hit Point system work? Other thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I havn't finished reading the book yet, but from what I have skimmed through and read, it doesn't seem to favor any one time period. Yes it does have a lot more modern items in the equipment chapter than 1920's items, but some of those things don't exsist in the 1920's (No computers, digital cameras, etc). Also the items in the equipment chapter don't get any description at all. You only get descriptions of the weapons, and these include thier history as well.

"So, Cthu, have your people eat my people and I'll get back to ya!"

on cell phone... "Hey, guy! book me into the Betty Ford clinic. People understand addiction better than gibbering madness. Ciao, baby!"

I dunno, CoC Modern might be fun. :)

I have read through a good portion of the book and I like it. I have played other CoC versions so I am not sure how good the book is for an introductory CoC game, but it does do well to cover the Mythos and explain a lot of ideas; I particularly like the use of quotes from the different stories or "Lovecraft Speaks" quotes from non-fiction comments.

Hit points are d6 for everyone (+/-0 CON).

The spells and monster sections provide a lot of entries and the artwork is pretty good throughout. There is a wealth of information for the gamemaster over 3 chapters for running games as well as 2 adventures.

My only complaint so far is the price, I was surprised when the store rung me up for $43 (after tax.)

I wouldn't have too much of a problem with modern Call of Cthulhu. It just would be much more X-files and much less traditional HPL-esque stuff.

You're probably right. But wouldn't be easier to get the right horror athmosphere when players know the 'setting' (1990s) quite well beforehand? It think anyone would realize they're in a world of hurt when they see that even the SWAT can't help them...

The magic system is not like D&D. For a person to cast a spell, they must pay an ability and sanity point cost. Most of the spells "only" inflict temporary ability score loss, but some are permanent. And the SAN cost for some of the spells will have the PCs going indefinitely insane. Now, that's not a bad thing, mind you...;)
