I started with 5E, just a few years ago, got the 5E PHB as my first product.

Yea, this site skews old. I'm 43, started with 2E, and that makes me a veritable novice around here.

The first product I owned was the D&D Expert Set (Moldvay w/Erol Otus cover). My friend had the Basic Set, and as 8-year-old, we weren't exactly flush with cash. Our group perpetually had the Basic Set checked out of the library that summer until more of us were able to find it. I ended up buying the Mentzer-revision Basic Set several months later, not really understand why mine was the same, but different than my friend's, but I appreciated having the player's stuff and the DM's stuff in separate books.

Basic (Moldvay) way back in 1982, I think it was. It came with Keep on the Borderlands, which was fun but never really moved me the way its reputation suggests it should. I mean, I had fun with it, but as a group we always had a better time creating our own campaigns.

I think for me it was a hand-me-down of H2: The Mines of Bloodstone and the AD&D Monster Manuals 1 & II. Probably around 1988 when I was a kid.

Just enough to give my parents a heart attack looking at the cover art.

While other people had the previous material, which I played with, my first purchases were the AD&D 1e DMG, PH and MM.
