Fixing your Players Handbook One

First Post
The following pages in Players Handbook 1 contain content that has been effected by errata in April, May or July or 2010 AND is not updated in the character builder.

pp. 180, 181, 182, 183, 185, 186, 188, 189, 267, 277, 281, 285, 286, 287, 292, 294, 295

These include errata for:
Acrobatics (Balance and Consequences of Failure)
Athletics (Swim, Long Jump, High Jump, Climb)
Bluff (Create a Diversion to Hide)
Endurance DC Table
Insight DC Table
Perception (Changed from Standard > Minor Action)
Stealth (twice)
Thievery DC calculation
Free Action redefined
Status Effects
- Dominated (twice)
- Marked
- Petrified
- Prone (twice)
- Restrained
- Slowed
- Stunned
- Surprised
- Unconscious
- Weakened
Resistances (Against Combined Damage and Not Cumulative)
Vulnerability (Against Combined Damage and Not Cumulative)

Effectively this is stuff we have to look up during sessions. If you are like me you printed out the errata, cut out the pertinent content and taped it in to your Players Handbook. This is obnoxious and distributes labor to ever single owner of a Players Handbook.

So our options are
Option 1
Buy the rules compendium. Expensive

Option 2
Cut and paste. Annoying

Option 3
Recreate 17 pages of PHB1 that can be slid into the spine and taped at the outside edge of the page leaving you with a seamless replacement.

Questions:
Is Option 3 illegal?
Would you want this?
Has someone done this already?

I went with option 4 (or is it 2a?): pencil.

I had to write fairly small in some places, and use the margins of the pages at times, but every errata to every book I own (barring a table in the DMG I haven't gotten around to squeezing in) has been added this way.

That said, I plan on buying the Rules Compendium... and if (when) that needs adjusting, the pencil will return.

In my game, we don't need to have every updated rule at hand at every moment. Mostly, we know the rules from playing the game so much. If there is a question, we look it up in the book, or if we know there is errata, we use the errata we know. It is not as if someone if forcing you to use errata, or penalizing you if you don't remember it.

If we need to check the errata... actually, that has never come up during a game for me, so I don't know how much trouble it would be. Probably not much, since several players use laptops during the game, and anyway, the DM could look it up on his computer. But again, it has never come up as a problem at the gaming table.

So, I guess my advice is to not worry about it, because it isn't a problem when you are actually playing the game, at least in my (somewhat extensive) experience.

There isn't an option to "print out the PHB1 pages of errata and keep them loose inside the front or back cover and trimmed to not protrude"?

That's my suggestion.

- It depends what you do with it. Keeping it to yourself if perfectly legal thing to do. It is called Fair Use.

- Yes it would be cool.

- If they have then distributing it could be problematic. It may fall under fair use, but probably wouldn't.

When I first saw the product list for Essentials, I knew it was going to have the erratad or updated rules. I managed to sell my PHB, DMG and MM for a bit less than half retail. I wasn't using the MM1 anymore because the monsters aren't as good as MM3 (or even 2). The DMG was only really getting opened every now and again. I had lent it to a friend and didn't really notice it was missing during any game session.

So I just put in my preorder for the rules compendium at the local store.

Compendium

The Rules Compendium is MSRP $19.95 and 320 pages of awesome. My store has a preview copy and it is a nice book. It is very easy to reference during play. I won't elaborate too much as a thread already exists to discuss the RC. Thalmin and I are both answering questions about the RC in that thread.
