....Where are you getting these from, exactly? And what do they do?

It's in the Book of Erotic Fantasy, under STDs...

Ba-da bing!

On a more serious note, elemental enhancements are great at lower levels, but they get progressively worse and neglegible. You could go merciful, but healing magic and regeneration heals both Subdual* and lethal damage. Unless you are a pack of Justiciars, a lot of your damage is going to be negated.

Go keen. Can't go wrong with Keen, especially on a high crit range/multiplier weapon. If you insist on elemental, why don't you commision a Cleric to tell your fortune (assuming your DM will allow it). Augury (cheap, underused service) if it's a good idea to get a Fl/Fr/Sh weapon.

I like this idea. My mother is a forture-teller (IC, of course -- OOC, my mother is an accountant, and would probably tell me to forget the sword and invest in a healing potion shoppe.) Asking her would force the DM to make the decision, and in the future, whenever we fight against creatures immune to cold or fire or shock, I can whine and complain to my hearts content, and have excellent justification! ;)

PS: where do the damage types like Acid, Sonic, et al. come from? And are they more 'expensive' than the regular DMG types?

I think that the difference is quite small, except for acidic weapons which are definately better but style-wise they are very poor IMHO. Stacking up more than one type of damage is probably the best you can do at high levels, although that also quite sucks (flaming and frost at the same time? ).

As for the image of it, I like both flaming and frost on melee weapons, while I prefer shock ranged weapons.

IMC I only allow combos I can easily visualise - so frost shock ok, frost flaming NOT ok (IMC, YMMV & probably does). I like flaming swords, so IMC flaming swords treat all the damage as fire for purposes of preventing troll regeneration & such. Cold weapons are less useful because the undead are unaffected.

From the 3 elemental types, I'd probably go for electricity as the most useful (same reasons as the others) - Although, I think fire looks the coolest.

If you're playing a swashbuckling type who relies on either sneak attack or precise strike... then I'd consider an undead bane for the +1 - as it's going to make fighting those guys a whole lot less painful!

Again, like others have said, holy is a great enchantment if you've got deep pockets. From a use point of view, I'd consider going for a +1 holy weapon instead of +1 keen +X. At least if the campaign is packed full of evil people.

As far as acid goes - seen it done well, recently faced an assasin whose acid dagger dripped venom that ate little holes in the floor/people/etc. Much like the blood from Aliens. I thought it was pretty cool, if a little distinctive.

try Acid or Sonic if you like elemental damage Fire Elect Frost are not useful at medium level or higher because the enemies are demons devils undeads all of them ignore this damage
the alignment damage are better

Holy is good. But if you stack with +1 value, I say Screaming (sonic) from Arms and Equipment Guide.

Force is another good option as almost no one has resistance to it, and you can strike incorporeal or even ethereal creatures.

Well... skeletons and liches. (And vampires are resistant.)

Frost weapons work just fine on zombies, ghouls, ghasts, wights, spectres, shadows, wraiths, devourers, vampire spawn...
