Are these the best battle spells for large engagements?

Hell, Flashburst pretty much assures that a low-level military force will be blinded and incapacitated by a 5th level Wizard. Even with counterspelling, that's a tough spell to unleash at War1 types.

How do you counter these magics?

I'm not familiar with Flashburst, but I assume when you say Pyrotechnics you aren't referring to the spell in PH?

5th level wizard? A fireball would counter it Reduced to dust is somewhat more effective then blinding!
