"Flavor" (as in "flavor-text"), does it irk you?

I'm down wit da flava nomenclatcha.

Don't hate the flava sava!

Heh!

Unfortunately for you the "flavor" descriptor is here to stay. And not just for RPG's either.

I'm not a big fan of the "fluff" or "crunch" descriptors myself, but at least when I use them, everyone knows what I mean.

"A Rose by any other name would smell just as sweet"

The different terms used to bother me, especially crunch and fluff. However, I learned to live with them because it's just slang. I try to refrain from using them, but they are only words and they don't interfere with the game.

Insipid!

Yeah, I do a heavy roll of the eyes whenever I see the terms "flavor", "broken", "fluff", and especially "creamy" and "crunchy". They're what I like to call the "3e parrot terms" (one or two designers use the terms, and suddenly everyone parrots 'em).

The benefit of these metaphors, however, is that everyone knows what you're talking about (even if some of the metaphors themselves are idiotic).

Fluff

I always try to evoke a sense of atmosphere by carefully crafting a story full of adjectives that help emerse the PCs in the game.

My Brother's favorite line:
"Can we cut the fluff and get to killin'?"
sigh.

I didn't have a problem with the term "flavour text" until you brought it up, but I've got a feeling I'll never see it the same way ever again.

However, "crunchy bits" takes the cake for irritation value...

i tired to vote, bit it wouldn't let me?!?!?

anyway: i like some flavour... i probably never would have played 40k if i didn't like the damn fluff so much.

but some of it sucks... so its a bit like any fiction: i like the good stuff! :p

I think flavor is a good, appropriate, respectful word to use for "flavor-text" areas. The term that is derogatory and that I personally avoid is fluff.

Well, I certainly agree that 'fluff' is worse than 'flavor.' If your conscience is at ease with using 'flavor', I will still regard you as a man with some principles.

Here's an idea: how taking that whole category of the stuff that has been called "flavor" and "fluff" and just calling it "roleplaying" or "gaming." And everything else, all that business of rolling the little plastic things and calculating sums and scores and bonuses and penalties, we'll just call all that stuff "Details."

How about that? There's roleplaying and there's "details." That would be more appropriate I think.

Fluff and crunchy-bits?
Background and mechanics?
Roleplaying and Rollplaying?

Personally I'm happy with flavour... flavour is a compliment, things without flavour are bland.

What's your problem with flavour?
