PS: Yeah, the character development is the key there. The Father/Son conflict, the Mother/Son conflict (I always saw the older "high school" girl as a mother-figure, and that Takun's brother and mom are gone so that his relationships between the Father-figure and Mother-figure could be explored independantly), the peer relations conflicts, that's the good stuff. The fact that he's always fighting giant robots serves as both cool content and commentary on the genre -- there seems to be an awful lot of commentary on the genre in FLCL.
