Ah. You first lesson about the United States. Mass transit is considered a last resort and everyone tries to drive their car everywhere. Hence, mass transit has smaller budgets and most residents have no idea where it goes and when.

In South Florida, I think each county has it's own busses, but they are connected to the Tri-Rail train system. I'm afraid it could take you a couple of hours to get to anywhere using that set up. I defer to more knowlegable people.
