FLGS rant

I don't find it odd at all...why? Probably because all the game stores around here are comic shops first, and game stores second. The guys at the place have a low knowledge of stuff, but they're great guys and will gladly help even if they don't know.

I asked about Arcana Unearthed a couple of days ago, and they had no idea what it was. So I said Monte Cook, and one of the two guys nodded and recognized the name as "one of the guys who worked on 3E". Still with no knowledge of the book, I just said it was out at Gen Con, then both of them nodded and said, "Well, then we'll probably get it in in about 2 weeks."

They didn't know WHAT it was, but its nice to get a rough estimate. :)

More Bizarre FLGS Tales

My FLGS sells a wide range of geeky items, from amime/manga to RPGs, CCGs and various cold cast figures and bobble-head Osbournes, so I don't expect them all to be experts. Add to that the fact that the guy who know the most about RPG stuff has another job and only works the FLGS part time. However, some conversations I've had there are just sad. Witness:

Me: "When will you be getting Product X?" (I can't remember what it was, but is was from S&SS.)
Clerk: "Let me check." Begins leafing through Wizards catalog.
Me; No, its not from WotC, its from Swaord & Sorcery Studios."
Clerk: Blank look. Continues leafing through Wizards catalog.
Me: "You won't find it in there. It's not by them." Gives up in frustration.

I actually went through this three more times with this guy. No matter how often I asked about this product, and told him it was not by WotC, he insisted on looking thorug the frelling Wizards catalog for it. Luckily this guy isn't there any more.

More recently, the following exchange:

Me: "How's the 3.5 selling?"
Clerk: "3.5 sucks."
Me: "OooooKay. Why do you say that?"
Clerk: "It's just a money grab by WotC and Hasbro."
Me: (Feeling like I am trapped on Usenet) "Right. Can I see my reserve box?"

Moments later in the same conversation:
Me: "Have you heard about what White Wolf announced at GenCon. Their winding up the WoD and starting over."
Clerk: "That's Wizards too."
Me: "What?!?"
Clerk: "Wizards owns White Wolf."
Me: "No, they do not."
Clerk; (Begins looking thorugh Previews for proof of his theory. Finds none.) "I know that Wizards bought White Woklf a few years ago."
Me: "Do you actually know anything about this industry?"

Sadly, this guy has worked there off and on for years and is a gamer, mostly White Wolf from what I can tell.

maybe he switched white wolf and tsr in his mind a while ago?

Actually, the "Wizards owns White Wolf" myth started several Gen Cons ago, when -- in a night of drunken revelry -- Clark Peterson stood up on a table and proclaimed, "YO! WIZAHDS! WE OWNZ YOUSE!"

He then proceeded to play a creditable version of "Lady of Spain" on Peter Adkison's head, and an urban legend was born.

:D

You know... I've been to a White Wolf drunken revelry and this story does not surprise me in the least. ;)

Some of these stories about employees not knowing diddly are starting to frighten me. At the very least these guys should be able to pick up a phone and call the distributor to find out what's going on.

Damn, I'd love to have a game store on Cape Cod.

Any idea how available and how expensive retail space is?

not quite serious, but not joking,

I know there is alot of retail space around Hyannis. As for price, I'm not sure how expensive retail space is to rent. If you try to come down, let me know. I'm A long time gamer looking for a good job, I know the products and if I have not played it, I heard of it.

There's a restraunt near our house that I'm praying will go out of business sometime soon because that shop space hasn't been touched in over seven years. Once the restraunt crashes and burns, I'm on my way to FLGSville. Or at least, I will be once I get the cashflow to have my own FLGS.

One day...ahh...

Haha! Next time you cats think your game store has shoddy ownership then think of the time I went in to mine asking when a d20 product was coming out and the owner/proprieter told me he didnt have time to keep up with that and wasnt really interested in D&D anyway. Funny, I dont remember asking him if he was interested in D&D or not, just when this product would be released. *sigh*

Dear Cyric! You should have looked him right in the eye and asked him if he knew what a gazebo was.

You could have also stared at him with a deadpan expression and said, "Hey, did you hear about WOTC being involved in the Kennedy assassination? Triangulation of crossfire, Drizzt was on one point, Wulfgar on another, and I hear Elaith Craulnober was the one who made the head shot.

Hang in there storyguide3. The fact that you still frequent this establishment shows you have a great deal of patience.
