flight as a skill

How well do you think it would work if you made flight a skill that worked somewhat like swimming. (This would be for games where flight was the norm, such as arial city style settings.)

This certainly is interesting. How would maneuverability fit into this? Why would one need to make skill checks? The only time I could think that a skill check might be necessary is during aerial combat. I think that the idea is interesting but it needs to be expanded on as to what it (can) apply to.

I used this with a winged PC I once.
Manouverability becomes a DC range eg Poor Manouverability = DC 0 - DC 15 whereas doing something like flying backwards at full speed would require Perfect manouverability DC 40 - 50

Personally I beleive that all movement should be combined into a single dex-based Manouvere skill which applies to the characters main move type (run, swim, fly, climb whatever and also cover things like balance)

DC 0 Walk, Glide etc normal movement with no effort required
DC 20 Run across uneven ground, fly in built up area (eg amongst trees, between houses), swim in rough water

Wingover DC 20? Hover DC 30?

Movement types as skills

I would be very interested to see this worked out..

Currently I use a modification of the swim and climb skills based on the jump skill..
You have penalties to your check ( rule of thumb being the DC for the penalty) and move a total of feet equal to your check total..

for instance, climbing a wall, DC 15, you move a total of 1D20 minus 15 feet on a move action.

Negative results can be bad :)

Creatures with a listed speed gain a bonus to thier check of thier move speed minus 20.

I was contemplating using this for flying as well, but hadn't spent enough time using the manueverability stuff yet.

What about the concept of movement points, kind of like hit points and mana points. You can spend movement points to improve your skill checks for say running over rough ground, or climbing a sheer surface.

How would this work out, or would it even be worth playtesting?
