Flintlock & Tomahawk: Endgame

Sykes, Speid:
You hear a slight splash and the beginnings of a strange fluting noise, slowly growing louder.

Sykes:
You see the rope start to vibrate and the chain, almost imperceptibly, starts to move downward, almost as if it were connected to a rope and pulley system and someone started to pull the rope up.

Abcott:
Say, isn't this approximately the center of the town?

Speid draws one of his recently reloaded pistols and stands, claymore in one hand pistol in the other ready for whatever new horror reveals itself...

Cold sweat comes to Sykes' brow as the fluting grows louder, his feet beginning to feel as though they are riveted to the ground. He loads his musket like an automaton, as the dissonant sound doubles, then trebles. Tisa's gurgle of surprised pain, the brittle crack of Somerset's bones, and James' accusatory wails of agony join the bizarre sound in his mind, creating a cacophonous symphony in his head.

In his panic, a thought comes to him unbidden; as if suggested by another, calmer person, living inside of him. When he utters the question aloud, it seems more real.

"Climb or cut? Climb or cut?"

[sblock] Is Sykes able to determine if the sound seems to be coming from above or below KL?[/sblock]

[sblock]Sorry for the delay in responding. Life's been a bit busy.

Rookseye: Sykes feels that it's likely coming from below.[/sblock]

Sykes intentionally bites the inside of his mouth, and the sudden searing pain and the coppery wash of blood bring him to his senses, at least, for the moment.

"Speid!"

"Does this chain connect to a well? Could climbing it help us ascend to the town above?
Answer quickly! If there is no hope for us reaching the surface this way, we may be better served to cut the chain (*Sykes eyes the sharp claymore meaningfully*) and prevent whatever is being hoisted up from below from reaching us!"

[sblock] Total aside here, but I just have to heartily recommend the CoC PC game that came out a short while ago, Dark Corners of the Earth. Excellent effort in the genre, and Headfirst did a brilliant job of capturing the feel of Lovecraft's work. I just finished it tonight, and though it can be difficult at times, it is difficult in a good way that most games released these days avoid for fear of offending those who prefer the path of least resistance in everything. If you can get by a couple of technical issues (couple crashes for me, and an upgrade of my drivers, not a big deal) it is worth picking up.

One more aside: I have been compiling notes on the three Call of Cthulhu scenario ideas I had intended to run for a sequel to KL's game and if everyone is still interested, I'd just like to do a straw poll to see what everyone would prefer to play. Unfortunately, we've lost the original scenario synopsis post in the OOC forum, so I will repeat them here, bare bones:

1. Civil War Era, in the deep south (Rookseye's Scenario)
2. WWI, "No Man's Land" (Chaosium module)
3. WWII, OSS operation in the Aleutian Island Campaign (Rookseye's Scenario)

[sblock]Hi, all. Hope you're all having a good holiday weekend. I haven't abandoned y'all, but I have been waiting for someone else to reply here. ;) I understand if folks are busy with the holiday, but I did want to throw that out there and let you know I was still here. If no one responds by Monday night, I'll push things along.

As for the game you wanted to run, Rookseye, I'd love to play in the Civil War scenario, probably followed by WWII and WWI, in that order. :)[/sblock]

[sblock]I'm pushing things along. Forgive the attempt at transcribing a Scottish accent. :)[/sblock]Speid nods. "Aye, this's the well. We coold cout it, or we coold climb it, but I'm nae sure we're well serv'd headin' back up into that nest o' the dead oop aboove. Gi' me the word, and I'll cout it."

Sykes, Speid: The fluting noise grows louder and more dissonant, if that's possible.

Abcott: Suddenly, you hear a strange fluting noise, full of trills and squeaks coming from the depths of the well.
