I think to some extent it mostly depends on the players. I, for one, would really enjoy at least trying something like this. I like to play many different kinds of characters and, at least in times with a high occurrance of games (my current group pretty much fluctuates from weeks with weekly + games, to weeks without games) I can get kind of bored of a character. I may love the character and enjoy playing them, but sometimes I just like to mix things up. Really, I'm just moody. 
But for me, at least, such a set up would allow me to play different things on a regular basis and keep the game fresh, in a way that playing the same character, with the same group for months on end cannot. For me, I reiterate.
Others clearly have different perspectives.
