Flying races?

Really...? So a dwarf's stonecrafting has no value in examining the game balance of a race's desirablity? It's not a combat abilty, and by your argument not a factor.

It may get more into art than science, but I tend to find non-combat abilites and a well crafted drawback to be the most interesting parts of race design.
My mistake. "Combat" should be read "adventuring utility" in my prior post. Combat is a major portion of adventuring utility but AU includes all of the roguish skills too. Stonecunning falls under AU as well.

And my point was that adventuring usually doesn't last more than a few hours a day and thus limiting flight to few hours a day is not a limitation. The fact that a race cannot fly all day does not limit a party of mixed races when they travel overland. Does it?

Except that the ability to fly all day could be used by the party to deliver messages (especially as flying distance is often shorter than walking distance, hence the term as the crow flies), to scout out an area, to disquise tracks so that a group appears to be smaller than it really is, and flying would be a much faster way to cross a large body of water than by boat.

As a more specific example, an Allarin being limited in such a way would be unable to take a small distinct item to an otherwise unreachable area, which would then allow the party's wizard to scry and teleport with much greater chance of success. This would also allow the Allarin to ensure that the zone of teleportation would be safe to land in.

I think that any party would figure out ways to maximize the advantage of the ability of one member to fly all day long. Granted that party member may be alone and susceptible to attack, but that happens any time a character is separated from the party, which happens often enough. I think that the adventuring utility is there, and therefore limiting it is a successful limit on the class's power

Morgenstern, I don't think counting 80ft on a hallway would be to bad, as far as bookkeeping goes, but it would keep a player from abusing the feat to fly endlessly, say underground.

Feathers and chiten (the substance of insect wings) are fragile and flamable.

Feathers may be, but I think you should differentiate the types of chitin. To most people, that's the hard substance that makes up an insect's exoskeleton. Thin pieces of chitin make up an insect's wings, but its markedly different from the chitin that make up most of an insect's harder bodyparts.

An insect's wings are membranes supported by sclerotized veins. The wings of newly emerged adult insects appear wet and limp, but quickly straighten as the insects blood pressure fills the veins and makes the wings straighten. The veins then darken and harden. The spaces between the veins are called cells.

Sorry, just wanted to add some more insect info. Damn entymology class...
