Folks selling painted miniatures at GenCon?

First Post
I'm attending my first GenCon this year, solely to purchase art (paintings, etc). I've had some friends go the last couple years and they told me they've never seen any painted miniatures for sale. Has anyone else seen high-quality painted miniatures for sale at GenCon? Maybe stuff like show-quality pieces painted by Anders Eklund and the like? It would seem like a good place to sell pieces like that.

THunder Mountain almost always has painted minis for sale at their booth.

I don't know if they still do it but they used to have a guy right at the booth who would paint minis for you on request while you roamed the hall.

The Painters Guild used to have a booth at Gen Con Milwaukee, where they sold painted armies and singles. I don't remember seeing them at Indy, though.

There are usually a goodly number of painted miniatures for sale in the auction; in fact they normally have a whole block of time set out for those. You might want to check that out. As well there may be some prepaints here and there, but I don't remember too many in the exhibit hall, just the auction.

What day is the auction held?

The auction essentially runs every day of the convention, from 10am until roughly 11pm, midnight, maybe later, just depending on what they have. Yes, they do actually have that much stuff. In previous years, it ran Sunday morning as well, but my understanding is that the plan is to not have any auctions on Sunday this year. There's also the auction store where you can directly purchase items, but I don't recall any painted minis there.

Once you get on site, go to the auction room (last year it was across from the dealer's room, but check the map in the program guide), and they will have a schedule printed indicating the time that painted minis will be for sale.

Looking at last year's schedule, I see that painted minis were sold from approximately 4pm to 7pm last year on Saturday. That doesn't mean they will be this year as well, but I think they try and keep things around the same time each year. Definitely check the schedule on site though.

And if those times are bad for you, remember that you can put a proxy bid in on ANY item; just go to the auction room early, and look back at the stock shelves; if you see something you like, any auction attendant there will be happy to show you an item and help you put a proxy bid on it if you like. I love proxy bids, allows me to be in two places at Gen Con at the same time. :)

I'd also point out that we do have an auction forum over at the Gen Con forums; you can ask the auctioneers questions directly, and they'll hopefully put put a prelimiary schedule there a couple of weeks before the con. :)
