D&D 3E/3.5 Fond Memories of ENWorld and the 3E Launch

I was over on the old RPGHost boards when 3e came rolling around. I didn't stumble upon EN World until around 2002 or so. I'm not nearly as baselessly scared as I was for the 2e/3e switch. It'll be a fun ride.

Hints? I posted this on the Paizo boards...

Look for a new freebie adventure from us a la Wizard's Amulet that you can download from the Necro website at the very first second that we are legally allowed to for 4E.

It's called Winter's Tomb. I am writing it. It will be a kick off for 1st level characters that will include pregens and tips for running 4E adventures. It will be alot like Wizard's Amulet in that it will be ready to run right out of the box with some step by step tips for new DMs and everything. Like WA did with Crucible of Freya, etc., Winter's Tomb will tie into some upcoming products from Necro.

It will be awesome.

It will harken back to some classic adventures. It even steals a trick from the Hidden Shrine of Tomoachan, if you can believe it. Since Erik and I both feel a strong need to keep "our" D&D strongly tied to the traditions and references of the past versions of D&D and the shared history.

A land where the elements collide.
A frozen setting in a snowy mountain range.
A battle with gnolls and frost hyenas.
A cave in forces the characters to find a way out or perish.
An ancient tomb of an unknown hero.
An evil-looking magical weapon--a barbed glaive.
An apparation with a strange message.
An iron key.
A return to the cavern-city of Tharza with more questions than answers.

I found Eric's news site right after I heard about 3rd coming out. I remember all the same threads about how D&D is going to die/ how could they do xxx/ I'll never switch, ect, that we are seeing now. It's too funny really. I never thought that gaming news would be like the soaps: the same story repeats if ya watch long enough ;)
Clark, kick buttocks on the module Idea: Wizard's Amulet was one of the first 3ed things I ran, so having its spiritual successor for 4th would be very cool.

Yeah, I feel ethically obligated to provide the same service for 4E. :)

I cant tell you how much email I have gotten, and some of it recently, from people saying that they found Wizard's Amulet and that was their gateway into 3E. I've always been real proud of that. That was my goal, to help people adopt the new rules, which I thought were a great step forward in our game. We won one of the very first ennies ever for Wizard's Amulet. I have it right here by my computer, actually.

Hopefully Winter's Tomb can be a similar gateway to 4E. We plan to provide the same stuff--pregens and a story hook all in a package that you can print and run within 15 minutes. To me, that first night should be immersive right away. You want to pass out pregens and start playing right away. Heck, if you want to run your own campaign later, great; or make your own characters later, great. But lets get playing NOW!!!

gotta official link?

Here. Now, how about instead of asking until we're all blue in the face, you wait it out.

Also, what you *want* is the Druid as a class in the PHB1. What you'll *get* is the Druid as a Cleric talent tree in the PHB1.

The community that gelled around my old site and EN World was by and large psyched about the new edition. I hope that everyone -- those planning on going to 4E, those planning on sticking with 3E, and those who aren't sure either way -- can find a way to enjoy each other's company and the discussions this time of transition will generate.

Yes, there was quite a tad more of positivity about the new edition back then. I think we will see that once again, as we get closer to the release date, and after the realease date.

Well D&D was coming off 2nd edition and the TSR days - there was a lot of frustration; plus people were only on the site if they were interested in 3e. All things considered, and also considering WoTC's initial none to great PR job (I don't mean to be harsh but it came off very very rushed), I think the response is remarkably positive.

As to the OP - I was thinking the exact same thing last week. How the 4e board is remarkably like it was when 3e came out - even some posters I haven't seen post in years are back with speculation.

Very cool, Clark. I'm guessing the tie to C1 is getting dropped into a dungeon with the clock ticking on the escape. This sounds like an evocative little romp, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Absent the 4E SRD, are you designing it 100 percent fluff right now, or as a 3E adventure you'll convert over later?

I really appreciate this thread - i was sadly not a part of the ENworld community when 3e came out. It was Eberron which pulled me in. However, the forum archives allowed me to time-travel (sort of) through some of the excitement of the early site, and it was a really cool journey.

So, even if 4e turns out to be crap (which i doubt), THIS is an important part of D&D for me, too. The talk, the excitement (ok, the flamewars :) ), checking every day for news, going YES or NOOOOOOO over new annoucements. It´s just seven kinds of cool.
