For those members who are familiar with Maryland...

Hi Everyone,

I recently received a great job offer from Lockheed Martin in Frostburg, Maryland. The possibility of my wife and I moving there is becoming more and more of a reality. However, I can't seem to find any information on the town other than demographic statistics.

It's a very small town (population around 7,000), but I was hoping that someone here may be able to point me to a website with pictures (or offer any other info). Most likely, I'll be flying down there next week for my final interview, but any prior knowledge would be great! Thanks in advance! :)

Try this:

Area information

Frostburg State University

Google pictures search

It's um, kinda rural. A good 2 1/2 hours from DC, and about the same from Philly or Pittsburg, I think. There is a college there. though, and an historic railroad. Apparently a big deal to genealogy hobbyists, too.

Close enough to the Pennsylvania border to maybe live there, though. Maryland taxes are kind of high, and Pennsylvania is often advertising on TV here to get people in tech fields to move there, so maybe there are incentives and such.

Frostburg is also where the Redskins do their preseason training. Property values are much more realistic than closer in.

I have only been threw once while I lived in DC but it seemed nice.

As far as I know, it's main claim to fame is Frostburg Univ. (making it mostly a college town). Mind you, I only know this because my brother almost went to that Univ. While I grew up in MD, I never went there (nor had any reason to do so ;) ).

Frostburg is a nice town, and Western Maryland is beautiful countryside. It's a little rural, and experiences a bit more winter than I'd care for -- but compared to Buffalo you'd probably consider it warm and temperate.

I can't speak to the Allegheny county taxes, though. I still own a home in Frederick from when I was stationed there, and we'd happily go back, but I only ever visited Frostburg on business or diving through; I didn't live there. Pretty, though -- I could happily retire to that area.

Didn't know LM was in Frostburg. What do they do there? Missile work?

Do you know for sure that you'll be working there? I work for Lockheed too and I didn't know where I'd be working until I got the offer letter. If you are still in the interview stage you may in fact not be working in Frostburg. Lockheed has Interview Centers all over the place where you go for the interview and you meet with managers from different departments. After the interview they get together and decide if they want to make you an offer. I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if they end up offering you a job in the DC/NOVA area which is where I work.

Technically, I received the offer from ACS Defense, which is being acquired by LM and renamed "Lockheed Martin Information Technology". To my knowledge, they are going to service LM (among other companies) as a consulting and outsourcing firm. If you go to their site http://www.acsdefense.com, many of the links revert back directly to Lockheed's site.
