Force Effects and Ethereal Interactions

It was my understanding that Force effects existed simulataneously in the Ethereal and Material planes.

But after a pair of Ethereal Night Hags pelted the party with Magic Missiles, one of my players has suggested that he believed Magic Missiles on the Material plane affected the Ethereal, but not vice versa.

So who is right?

"None of these effects extend from the Ethereal Plane to the Material Plane."

Sense? Why should it make sense?
