Forcecage Question

Rate of diffusion of a gas across a membrane is not simply a function of molecule size but also of apperature size. Therefore the slow passing of O2 and CO2 could not be a problem while the more rapid breath weapon/gaseous form simply is blocked.

Or "You have been slowly seeping through the gaps in the force cage for an hour now and suddenly your head and chest solidify on one side and your legs and belly on the other. That was a nice creative attempt but you've left a bit of mess. What do the rest of you do?"

Also, the ELH implies that a wall of force is not perfect give that epic escape artists can eventually slip between the gaps. And then there is the cube of force.

Thanks for all the responses.

I would probably rule that it is death if you cannot acquire the necessary counter to drop the cage or otherwise survive the time period without air. It's a 7th level spell; at that level there are other ways to kill you more quickly. The lack of save makes it pretty tough, though.

There is one flaw with the forcecage the badguy and then just leave him to suffocate. Who wants to wait that long to get the loot? Mabye if it's a monster who wears/uses no equipment. But if it's got some magic items I don't want to be waiting no 6-8 hours for the dumb thing to suffocate.

Well, if you are a mean wizard, there is a second level spell you can use to kill all your enemies with no saving throw.

Your enemy has locked himself behind an iron door in a stone and steel vault. How do you kill him with an 2nd level spell?

Cast Arcane Lock on the iron door. Not only is the outside world locked out, but now the enemy is locked inside, and sooner or later he will starve or suffocate or die of dehydration or boredom or old age.

IMO this would be upto the individual DM. It would make the spell a no save, no SR death spell for any creature susceptible to suffocation and no larger that Large.

All your enemies who have locked themselves inside a stone and steel vault, that is.

Maybe it should just kill people. Ever think that you don't need to nerf this? Idiots who don't have backup and go up against people who can cast forcecage deserve to die.

The rules, as written, do not seem to support death from Slow Suffocation. If the rules do not allow for the spell to kill I don't see how not letting the spell cause death is nerfing. Also my players do not seem to like death effects that don't allow saves.
