[Forgotten Realms] Dead magic zones and magic effects

I'm trying to decide how to ask this without sounding like a re-re, please bear with me... I had an idea for the grandiose campaign I'm currently running. One of my major NPC's is a highly powerful wizard, and one of my main villains is soon to be Khelban Blackstaff (he's been corrupted by Cyric, Shar, and the Shadow Weave). I wanted to have Khelban cast some sort of spell on the NPC to make him "insane," then throw him in an asylum for crazy mages that would be within a dead magic zone. But if I did that, then wouldn't the spell on the NPC just go away in the zone? Anyone got any ideas?

PS - Just so we're clear, I yoinked the mage asylum idea from Monte Cook's most recent Ptlous update.

First of all, could you please tell me what a "re-re" is? :)

Second, I remember something being mentioned in Magic of Faerun that Shadow Magic, being from the Shadow Weave, is not affected by Dead Magic Areas. If the spell were, say a spell that put the mage in a state of permanent nightmares, then the Dead Magic area would not collapse it. Furthermore, if someone were subjected to a waking state of permanent nightmares long enough, then I would suppose it would permanently damage their psyche, and simply negating the spell would not help them as much.

Third, I believe the appropriate place for the topic is the campaigns (or is it called DM advice?) Forums on this site.

Under FRCS rules - this is the case. Looks like it won't be a problem if your version of Khelben is using the shadow weave.
