Forgotten Realms: History of the Realms

What's appropriate for the Realms seems to have lost all meaning. They seem intent on making the Realms free anything unique.

Notwithstanding my previous post, I agree in part. Frankly, I am going back to 1371 and am ignoring everything from 3E, 3.5E and now 4E and redoing those years based on the campaigns I run. I will be surprised if anything that has ever been introduced via a novel will make the cut in my campaigns and will do my best to avoid them so that my brain doesn't get polluted.

I've got enough material to run years of games and I'm really happy with 3.5E as it stands. I'm 38 now and will probably only play D&D/FR for a few more years before my business interests consume all of my time so the arrival of 4E and the latest batch of RSEs has been an excellent catalyst to revisit my FR games and redo them based on what my players and I really like.

I agree it's a little disconcerting, but Brian James mentioned (on WotC or Candlekeep, can't remember) that the art budget for this book was very low, and so he pushed for the budget to be spent on new maps rather than new art. Right call, IMO, for a book of lore.

Thankfully that was reflected in the cover price right? Right?

I just got my copy....

the last paragraph aside, Mulhorand toasts Unther!?! Admittedly I expected Mulhorand to win, but the area had so many adventure opportunities....

Did/Would Messemprar ally with Thay?
What did/would Selune do with the Unther resistance?
What did/would Tiamat do in Chessenta and Unther?
All the ex-Gilgeam priests....
The more pure mulan blood lines in Unther...how would they change Mulhorand?

And then we get that last paragraph....sounds like Thay takes a hard hit...and even if many in Mulhorand take a hit...they've got tons of planetouched. If Mulhorand doesn't survive this spellplague I am going to be sorely disappointed. I mean they've got children of the freak-n-gods walking the country...

If I was going to template Mulhorand with the 'points of light', I'd have the pharaoh killed and the line of succession thrown out of wack...have tons of 'pharaohs' carving themselves a portion of the empire.

I have a guestion for you who already have the book. How much is there about the other continents outside Faerun? I mean like Zackhara, Matztica and Kara-Tur. As it is not yeat available where I'm from but I'm planning on possibly buying it. But this guestion is the thing that still keeps me from deciding wether to get it or not.

I'm about 1/3 way through reading the book cover to cover and there's a lot of Kara-Tur stuff that I remember from my old OA modules (Black Leopard Cult, Giants in Grey etc). I've also looked at the last few pages which cover 1356 onwards and there are quite a few references to Maztica, Anchorhome, General Cordell and so on. Didn't see anything on Zakhara though. Reused art aside (and most of this is good art if a bit jarring seeing something you know illustrating something different), this is a superb book and wel worth getting!

Cheers

In my current campaign, the PCs are fighting for Mulhorand, against an alliance of Thay and the remaining Unther,
with both Set and Shar working against Mulhorand as well
. It's a rather "shades of gray" campaign, and the Untheric resistance is pretty much beaten after their leader got dealt with.

Sounds good. Well I'm going to visit our FLGS tomorrow so if they already have it, I'm going to buy it too.

I will probably only get my copy of the book on Thursday or Friday.

So I was wondering: How many pages of the book are actually dedicated to the "future timeline" up to the 4E setting that has been generating so much controversity?

Just the last two pages, 158 and 159, are jumping the timeline ahead. The parts that create the most controversy is the last two entries, essentially the right half of page 159.
