Very high quality, and it's actually cheaper than the Realms.

It's all relative. FRCS has the best production values of any RPG book I've seen. Midnight might be cheaper, but I've heard the books have binding problems. If thats the consequence of cheap price, I'd gladly pay more.

It depends on the setting I suppose. Realms was full color and gloss paper, Midnight was only partially color and partially gloss. However, I don't think Midnight would have conveyed the mood as well had it all been in color and glossed. In fact, I liked the black and white sections better than the colored and would have been happy to save a few bucks for a 100% black and white copy with a poster map.

They did have some binding issues though. In fact, mine should be coming in today after I sent it off for replacement. I've been very impressed with how FFG has handled this.

Could anyone give a synopsis of Midnight's salient features? I've never read any of the books.

Personally I like FR, now that I've learned some of the regions. I agree with whoever said it for the kazillionth time that FR works really well if you tone down the magic and uber-NPCs.

Go here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/midnight.html
And here: http://www.againsttheshadow.org/index.php

The best way to descibe Midnight is Middle Earth if Sauron had won. Now, imagine that with a little "Nazi Germany" influence and you are getting the picture.

Several new races.
Three new core classes. (That are actually needed.)
Wizards and Druids are prestige classes.
New Magic System (The best I've seen.)
Izrador, the Dark God has taken over most of the world.
No good clerics. (All clerics, called Legates, worship the only god, Izrador which is very evil.)
Magic is outlawed.
Literacy is outlawed.
Orcs and the goblin races are the new government
Human-centric world. (3 subraces of humans.)
Elves and Dwarves are executed on sight by Izrador's forces.
The economy has completly collapsed. Coins are worthless in most areas.
The Dwarves and Elves are fighting a huge battle for their territories.
Heroic Paths (Powers granted at each level to make up for the lack of magic.)
The world has been severed from the planes. (No teleportation and no way to heaven or hell. The dead sometimes rise because they have nowhere to go. The gods can't hear the prayers of their worshippers anymore. No clerics.)

Thats some of the major tidbits.

I'd be happy to answer any questions.
