Forked Thread: Three more days

Should the ceasefire for the edition wars be extended another 30 days or more?

Legitimate? Really, edition wars are just people telling each other how they're having badwrongfun. I mean, that's it really. We've been debating issues this whole time, and its practically devolved into that a few times. The ban wasn't on discussing differences between editions (even with value judgements), it was on large scale "My game is better than your game" threads.

Now, I have found the Ignore Thread option (which is lovely, I must say), but I find the fact that ENWorlders are trying to impose their preferences on other ENWorlders frankly disgusting. Just let each other play the game you like. Debate individual topics. But, for the love of all that is holy, why must anyone berate, demean, or otherwise insult another edition of Dungeons & Dragons, the game we are all gathered here to talk about, regardless of edition.

I don't see anything legitimate about edition wars at all.

This.

I voted to lift the ban, but only with the restrictions Mouseferatu suggested.

If we have to lift the ban, I'd vote for these restrictions as well. I'm not seeing that people mindlessly screaming "your game edition sucks!" is really a great social or intellectual boon here. Perhaps instead of locking the thread, just start popping users for vacations. Enough heads on pikes might get it through heads how to be a little more civil.

Yes, I do love reading over and over (and over) how people shouldn't think about fantasy too much or too hard, it's really enlightening after the 402nd time.

Could we not have digs at anyone on either side of the divide in this thread? I know that hong's simple, earthy wisdom isn't for everyone, but this thread isn't about one side or the other, it's simply about whether or not we should ask the moderators to continue the ban.

*wonders how many posters have text files of their edition war post they're planning to start on ENWorld the day the ban is lifted*

I betcha if it is lifted, it'll barely be noon before the mods have to put a restriction on how many threads can be created, or it'll overrun the first few pages of the boards. We've had problems like that in the past.

PUNCH AND PIE!!!

I see no reason to continue the war. It is clear to any right thinking person which edition is superior.

Indeed. Plus, didn't we just have a post about how we were running out of memory? If nothing else, holding off on the War To End All Wars might be a good idea until that situation is resolved.

I'm a bit more optimistic (although I did vote in favor of extending the ban), but you make a good point. When the secret braintrust of Forum X was actually planning trolling excursions over here, they'd typically lay off as soon as there was a topic ban, only to reappear in full force as soon as it was lifted (enforcing the idea that, unless they're applied in perpetuity, such topic bans are useless).

While, I don't see a lot of those same accounts (i.e., screen names) being used in this particular round of "My way is better!", the paranoiac in me thinks that many of the new and 'inactive until recently' accounts seemingly dedicated to spamming the forums with flamebait may simply be new masks for those same old trolls. I truly hope that this isn't the case, as it means that I can expect my ignore list to double in size later this week :(

I think there has been a deeper problem with enworld, the mods are more likely to lock threads than [temporarily] ban the few posters who stepped over the line. This style of moderation is bad IMNSHO because it allows someone with a grudge or bias against the thread to simply ‘act up’ and get the thread locked.

Really? I've always found the mods to be really good about this. Is it just a phenomenon specific to recent edition wars threads? If so, I agree, it's better to get rid of the troublemakers than lock an otherwise decent thread.
