Forked Thread: Three more days

Should the ceasefire for the edition wars be extended another 30 days or more?

Personally I'd like to see an environment where those aspects of any system, not just D&D, can be compared and discussed reasonably. I just don't see a lot of merit to discussions that are overly broad where things devolve into a bunch of dive-by, "your system fail at every level" posts.

I've posted this elsewhere but since there are now several threads on the subject and I do not wish the point to go unnoticed (that there are several threads on the matter might even be illustrating the point) . . .

Mods need to more effectively use the tools at their disposal to split discussions (rather than close them down) and combine discussions (rather than have people expressing the same opinions a hundred times and sounding as if they are beating a dead horse rather than simply adding to the larger discussion). Mods can split edition wars conversation out of threads that it inappropriately infects and then combine the split-off thread into a huge ongoing depository thread for edition wars chatter (and temp ban anyone who repeatedly causes that to need to happen in threads where it is inappropriate). Once people realize that trying to shut down conversation by jumping in with edition wars talk or accusations, I think that ploy will become less attractive.

Stifling genuine discussion on edition comparisons (essentially rules comparison) is probably not a good thing for EN World in the long run.

I like how obviously biased the poll is.

The "edition war ban" is an enabler for passive-aggressive behavior. Made worse by those of the pro-4E clique who cannot tolerate any criticism of 4E whatsoever.

The Mods just need to clamp down on off-topic or threadcrappish posts. The edition war ban itself is not needed. So that's my vote, but I won't enter it into the poll above due to its inflammatory language.

I found the whole ban odd, since it was clearly what people wanted to talk about. A community's leading forum banning people from talking about the topic of the day actually seemed like a good way to drive people to other boards.

That said, I do like Mouseferatu's suggestion, which might cut down on the few posters on ENWorld who feel compelled hijack every thread with this stuff.

Actually I was citing the currently unannounced Grinder RPG, in which players take on the role of meat grinders and attempt to churn out more sausage than their competitors. One important aspect of the game is that sometimes competitors "accidentally" fall into the grinder and inadvertently boosts daily production by 10% for the day. It will be a D20 system game published under the OGL, and will feature character classes such as the meat head, the ham-fisted thug, the turkey, and of course, the fowl mouth, among others.

Have they fixed that 'oregano' problem? I heard it's really open for abuse.

i vote that the ban be lifted, but that the mods instigate a zero-tolerance policy on starting edition wars in any thread not specifically created for that purpose. Iow, if someone starts a thread comparing the editions, fine. But if there's a thread talking about any other topic, and someone comes in and starts claiming that the entire topic sucks because x other edition was better, that person is instantly banned for a week. Second offense results in perma-ban, no exceptions.

Let the edition wars people yell at each other and don't go into their threads if it bothers you. Help out the people asking for gaming help on this forum. Go participate in the other forums on this site if you can't control your clicking and simply must watch people spew bile.
I don't think anyone really cares about the two-thousand edition war threads that will be started.

What really gets up people's goat, is the little smacktards who come in and crap in non-edition war threads.

By allowing edition war threads at all, you're inviting such people to spew their bile in whatever thread they want. If I create a pro-4e thread, the last thing I want is a bunch of idiots telling me 4e sucks and XYZ is teh 1truway!

But that's what will happen. A pro-4e is not an invitation to start a crapfest, but you can't rightly say it's not 'provocation' if you're allowing edition war threads at all.

Therefore a zero-tolerance policy is really the only effective alternative. Stick to your edition. It's not that freakin' hard.

Personally I think the cease fire should be permanent, it's part of the reason I'm thinking strongly about leaving WOTC forum. (They have such a wuss policy against flaming and or trolling... most of which can be linked to edition war)

Well that and the fact that you know... it's about the most unreliable forum I think I have ever seen.

I like that I came here tonight, and saw -no whine threads- what so ever. I'm not actually sure which topic to read first.

Yeah yeah say all you want "Just don't read those threads!" quite frankly, I don't need those threads bogging down and burying threads that I -do- want to see.

I think there has been a deeper problem with enworld, the mods are more likely to lock threads than [temporarily] ban the few posters who stepped over the line. This style of moderation is bad IMNSHO because it allows someone with a grudge or bias against the thread to simply ‘act up’ and get the thread locked.

The lack of moderation towards posters is a problem. Trolls on either side of the edition war just keep the flames roaring and nothing actually happens to them, except the thread they didn't like in the first place gets shut down. And then some posters who do nothing but make pithy attempts at "wit" get a warning in every other thread they post in...and just keep doing it.

I vote that we allow "edition wars", but only under the condition that we allow Razz back and give him moderator permissions. :)

Actually, I agree with the Mouse's opinion.
