I agree with Boarstorm here. I don't believe the intent of the OP was to start a mini war inside of this thread, but pretty much to give 3 options (a) Yes, (b) No, (c) I like pie/I don't care/arrrrg stop talking about this/huh?/etc.

It is my hope that we can have a civil discussion on any version of the game. If people don't like whatever version or whatever game it is, that is their perogative; that said, there isn't any need to attack constantly and start trouble. Instead, turn that energy into something creative and discuss the good points of your game. Ask a question. Design something. Fall back on the inevitable "X build can beat Y creature". Fighting is a waste of keystrokes.

The thirty day ban did nothing to stop edition wars. So I would have to assume an additional thirty day ban would continue to not really stop any one from cruelly bashing the games other people enjoy. I don't see the point of edition wars being permissible in the first place, but I've been considering taking a forum break until people decide to behave more civilly towards others.

I agree with Ari and I like to state that healthy discussion comparing the two editions can be good for the community. D&D 4e is not going away, and discussion about the likes and dislikes of it can help the game grow into something the majority of the D&D players want it to be.

Right now, just shutting down threads were people are attempting to discuss the things they like and dislike about 3.x or 4.0 is not mature or productive as D&D fans are having these same discussions offline anyways.

I think the healing really doesn't get to begin and the community comes back together until we get to share our feelings and ideas about the new edition. As long as these threads are censored the community remains divided even more.

Just make a specific place to discuss the two games, when people post in the wrong place, move the thead and then if someone messes up and gets heated, give them a warning and if they do it again ban them for x days or a week or whatever is the policy.

Edition wars are better than...

A.) The passive agressive sniping that is going on now...because people can't actually speak their minds.

B.) Warn/Ban truly offensive individuals but the slamming closed of threads and handholding is rubbing me a bit raw. Offensive individuals are those that belittle and insult people, not editions of D&D. If you can't emotionally handle your pet edition of D&D being criticized don't enter the thread.

Also, as far as I can tell no one who isn't in the mood to argue doesn't is forced to participate in any edition war thread. I am interested in compare and contrast threads and the boons and banes of these differences. Heck, at least people care about their hobby here. Edition wars exist because people are passionate and passion is what makes a community vital.

I don't know what the intent of the OP was. I was speaking generically and not just about the OP. However, I will say that if the OP's intent was to have an unbiased poll then he did not successfully do so. "Yes" and "No" or more verbose options with similar neutrality would have been better. But rather than assume the OP didn't know what he was doing, I assumed that he did know what he was doing. That's still an assumption, of course.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I would sooner stop visiting (if the forum has become unpleasurable for me) than suggest someone else do so. I may not agree with you, but I don't roll like that.

I'm sorry I phrased that so poorly. By "you" it should really read "anyone", but I'll leave it unedited so that your response makes sense to posterity. I didn't mean to suggest that you personally are prone to make the statement I described, I was merely attempting (ineptly, as it turns out) to forestall what I consider to be a common objection.
