Fortune Cards?

One of the three gaming shops I was at this Saturday had a box of them. I don't think that's some kind of a trend - one of the three is closing soon, and another has strictly scaled back their card stocks (not just CCGs - they have a dozen or so packs of Paizo item cards sitting up by the register).

Personally I'd expect to see them up as singles on ebay soon...

Heh...just checked and Troll and Toad has singles up right now. Prices seem completely random right now, especially since there's no way there could be a legit secondary market for them yet since they were JUST released today.

Oh, and if you were on the fence about buying them, not all of the cards are on T&T yet and not all of them have pictures, but the ones that do are big enough and clear enough to read the text and see what they do.

I picked up the box of boosters I had pre-ordered. Still need to go through and find out what, if any cards I am missing. Then I'll evaluate the batch more thoroughly.

They don't seem all that over-powering if used in a limited fashion. As a DM I plan to use them as boons, rewards, and special bonuses tied to areas and events in adventures.

My only complaint so far is the lack of zone effects and misfortunes that would have made this a real winner for us DMs.

The kinds of things I would really have liked to have seen something like: An irridescent mist suddenly drifts across the area, partially obscuring view and giving all within it partial cover.

It is officially time for me to eat some crow.

I pre-ordered a display box of boosters of the Fortune Cards with the impression that this would give me as the DM to add some nifty random twists to play on occasion. On that count it can still work, but sadly, without counterbalancing negatives, and neutral battlefield effects, it misses out on what could have made this a great add-on product.

Having said that, here is where I get to the eating of crow:

With the monetary outlay for a full box of what Wizards is billing as "random, but not collectible" it seemed reasonable to believe one could get a full set of the 80 different cards, or at the least, to only miss a couple.

Sadly I am missing a full one fifth, 20%, of the possible cards.

For the record the missing ones are 6, 7, 13, 15, 22, 24, 33, 40, 47, 50, 53, 61, 66, 68, 70, and, 80.

I have not checked to see if these are rare, uncommon, or common.

Since I was looking at these as a DM tool, I suppose I may have gotten over enthusiastic, but as a longtime (since 1980) participant in this fine hobby is it too much to ask the publisher to throw me and others that support their products a bone and do something that doesn't screw us over, instead making money while providing good value and support for continued loyalty?

I have already written to Wizards with my concerns and have no clue how they will react or if they really give a hoot.

I will not tell anyone else to buy or not buy, I will merely offer up my experience for whatever it is worth to those that read this post.

Sounds like you could use a Plot Twist Deck, or something similar.

Yeah, the WotC fate cards are explicitly a player power-bump. :p

Every one of the missing cards is a rare.

You are missing 16 out of the 40 rare cards.

40 out the 80 in the whole set being rare seems like a lot, and obviously makes it more difficult to get a whole set by buying just one box.
