Found in a Used Source Book...

Sorta. I found characters I had forgotten about. Characters I had made in high school. Unfortunately I found them in front of the current group. It was --- embarassing.

I've found all sorts of things such as character sheets, sketches, maps, campaign notes, etc. I have saved most of them as interesting artifacts.

Artifacts??? What are their powers? :p

Heh, quite often they act as a confusion spell cast at 20th level. Other times they have the ability to inspire greatness and sometimes can act as a powerful aura of fear  .

Victoria's not a huge place, so it's not uncommon to bump into people you know. There's only one book store that sells used D&D books (Snowden's... I think it's on Broad Street, for those who know the city). I go there occasionally, hoping to pick up a Dark Sun book - but I've pretty much cleaned them out in that department.

Anyways, I've found numerous little "Goodies" from my purchases. My favourite was when I bought a copy of "A Mighty Fortress" for 2e. Upon opening the book, there was a name in the corner. I knew the guy! What's more, I still hang out with his brother! And, most importantly, *I didn't know he gamed!*. That was kind of cool. If I ever see him around, I'm going to bring it up.

I've also picked up numerous Dark Sun books where the previous owner had highlighted random passages (and they seemed fairly random, trust me). I was quite annoyed at first, but by my third purchase, I had actually come to enjoy "highlight McGee's" notes on Athas. It became a hobby of mine to figure out why one of the chapters of the Veiled Alliance meets at a wine shop, and why he felt it was so necessary to highlight it.

As for character sheets - I've found more than a few. In my copy of Isle of Dread (I picked up in the last six months, mostly out of nostalgia, but also in the hopes of putting a few of the encounters into my Savage Tide campaign), there were NPC notes made in the margins of a few pages - just AC, HP, Damage, and a Name ("Telvenur" or something like that). When I picked up one of the Jakandor books, there was a complete Knorr warrior in the game. However, he had a lot of magical items on him, so I'm not sure whether the group was running a "core" Jakandor game or not!

Finally, when I was young and stupid, I traded a friend of mine a box of Dark Sun stuff in return for his Forgotten Realms stuff (Stupid, I know). He had pages upon pages of crap in there, including an ENTIRE ADVENTURE based around (get this) rescuing a unicorn.

He plays rugby now. One of these days, I want to bring that adventure up, and see how he reacts.

For a while we used to find copies of used D&D books at a local bookstore that had the same name in them - James. They'd always be recent books, so we kept wondering what James was doing with them. Maybe he buys them, scans them and then sells them. A couple of our gaming buddies also ended up with some of James's former possessions.

My fiancee bought some RuneQuest box sets off e-bay that had some character sheets and maps in them. It was kind of fun to see someone else's take on the game, although there was nothing that was particularly useful to us.

I guess it wasn't technically IN the book, but here's my story.

I've never had a local gaming store when I was into games, so I used to buy a lot of books online, many of them from eBay. I forget which book it was, but I remember being surprised at the box when it came. It was much larger than necessary for a D&D book, so I didn't immediately realize what it was. When I opened the box there was no packaging, but the book was obviously laying on top of something. I removed the book to see a jar of green powder. It had a label, but it was a home-made printed label and hard to read. I gathered from it that it was some sort of cleaning substance.

I emailed the seller and asked if he had left the jar in the box by mistake. He denied it. He claimed to not know what it was. I sent him photographs and everything. I even called the shipper (UPS, if I recall) to see if they might have opened the box and put something extra in by mistake, but they said that they rarely open packages and even when they do they note on the package that it had been opened (this had no such note) and they do not take anything out of the packages, just move stuff around, so they couldn't have accidentally put something extra back. Plus, I could not think of any reason why the seller would use a box so big if he hadn't planned on putting the jar in there as well.

I pondered calling the police, but I just ended up keeping it for a few weeks (in case the seller suddenly realized what it was) and then tossing it. That's one of the weirdest things that's ever happened to me.
