Found Spellbooks

What makes you think I disregarded the answer.

I thought I knew the answer. I simply wanted other opinions. When I talk to my DM, I'll be telling him that a handful of people on this forum say it's not in the rules. I wouldn't have even thought of talking to my DM about it if not for some of the responses to my question. So no, I did not disregard your answers. Again Thank You for your assistance.

Add me to the handful of people that say that it's not allowed in the rules. Gaining access to new powers by finding them is not part of 4E mechanics. How do other classes find powers in the game? Or are you seeing this strictly as a benefit for Wizards?

Strictly speaking... you CAN add spells found in enemies' spellbooks into your own spellbook.

It's called "retraining" and can be done each level.
If you find a spell you like more than one of your own in an enemy's spellbook you can replace the spell on your next gain in level.

Add MORE spells to your spellbook besides the 2 (or 3 if you took the feat)?
Not by the rules - and not in the spirit of D&D4

Agree/Disagree:

I agree, not in the 4th ed rules, not technically allowed.

BUT, I believe it would not off-set the balance by merely giving the wizard more options. In this, the wizard is special because he already had those options, with more spellbooks, he/she would just have MORE options, but can still only pick his normal amount.

I want the Rain of Colourless Fire as a ritual.
Oh, the Invoked Devastation, too.

So they were 1980s anti-nuke sentiment in a campaign setting .. but if it's good enough to wipe out a quarter of a continent, my epic wizard wants it.

If you could just add spells to your spellbook then why do you have to buy a feat to get 3 spells instead of 2?

I think a fair house rule would be to create a new feat that allowed you to copy all spells you find into your spell book, assuming they are your level or lower, if you already have that other feat.

Yeah, Why not. The 4th ed rules are so new that there's so much room the rules don't exactly cover. Besides, they're just guidelines. If my DM and I can figure out how to make it work, then more power to us.
I made a house rule for just this purpose. In a nutshell, Power Preparation means:
1. You can't retrain powers.
2. You retain low level powers as you gain levels, and you can even learn new powers by finding "power books" or by spending cash on research.
3. This option is available to all classes, so as to avoid any [perceived] major advantage to the wizard.

If you want to show your DM the nitty-gritty, just go to my Library of Unearthed Arcana and click on the Tome of House Rules [4e] link.

Hope that helps,
TS
