Fourthcore has Died

This is very sad news. I have been running their weekly grind sessions (adapted from the Pathfinder version) and our group is having a blast.

For me, Fourthcore directly addresses the question of how much effort is necessary to run 4E in an old school manner. The answer that I've found is not much at all.

I recently ran a couple of rooms from a friend's game in 4E that were taken from the Tower of Gygax. It has gone very well, and ran effectively the same as in the earlier editions.

I guess it's a "haters gotta hate" sort of thing.

And I had just found out about it.

The world has moved his way. I mean, they litterally went through and increased all the damage that monsters do. They did a updated Tomb of Horrors for the RPGA, and a book inspired by and named that, which is now considered the best published 4E adventure, at least by WotC. And theres been all those columns on the WotC website (including a couple this week, and, especially, the recent one on converting an older module but am to lazy to look up) that seem to point back to the future.

SvsD should have just declared victory.

Their stuff was brilliant, and inspirational for me personally to try designing with a little more confidence. I'm really going to miss those guys...

I think that totally sucks.

I thought the direction 4thcore took 4e was awesome. I levelled up my players PCs to lvl 16 and we played Iron Lich module. I warned them how deadly it could be and that they should set their expectations low. And that after 4 hours real time ... they were dead.

Man, they played better than they had ever played before. I had never rated them very much as tacticians or puzzle solvers, but they sure proved me wrong. They stepped into the zone! And it was awesome.

I'm sad at this news.

And I'm angry too. I'm angry that there are people out there who spend their time and energy taking apart other peoples creative efforts and make something awesome, die. In this case the awesome thing was the designers passion to make Old School 4e Dungeon Modules.

I guess a lot of people can't create, so instead they just hate. And so goes the world...

The Fourthcore Armory has some of the most eye-opening, fun magic items ever written for D&D4. Those are showing up in my game, even though it's a pretty wimpy campaign by fourthcore standards. Revenge of the Iron Lich is one of the most entertaining convention/one-off dungeon delves I've ever run. Save Versus Death's (or at least its principal author's) output coming to an end is a sad thing to me.

I'm glad, though, that three more adventures are coming, and that it sounds like this will some day lead to a game built from the ground up to support the playstyle fourthcore espoused. That'll be a blast to see in action!

Sadly I feel like I missed it having been away from the DnD scene for awhile.

Can anyone do a quick summary of what the changes were all about?

I will definitely check it out and I wish the author all the best going forward.

No surprise on the WotC boards.

Just check out this nice little thread announcing an innovative and interesting free 4e project that wouldn't be to everyone's tastes.

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible

Yeah, the WotC community in general is really quite childish. The thread you linked, along with the other thread announcing SvD's retirement from 4e content, is ultimately what motivated me to ditch the place and check out EnWorld instead. I think I upgraded.

On one hand, I kind of hope that SvD rethinks their choice of discontinuing 4C and just starts ignoring the haters, but on the other hand, I'm really looking forward to what SvD will be capable of doing by building a new system from the ground up. They (He? She? ... It?) are clearly very talented at what they do.
