Foxes?

Are there stats for foxes in D&D? What animal could be used as a stand in for fox in a core-only game?

Would Small dog be OK?

Someone or rec.games.frp.dnd said that foxes are closer in size to cats, and that they should probably be Tiny instead of Small.

Frostburn has a Tiny arctic fox, but I thought arctic foxes were smaller than red foxes? Also, Small is half the size of a wolf (Medium). Should foxes really be significantly smaller than that? It seemed to me that big dog ~= wolf, small dog ~= fox was close enough for government work...

I saw a red fox in my back yard the other day. It was Small, not Tiny (the small end of small, perhaps, but way bigger than a house cat). The Tiny bunnies that normally infest my yard were nowhere to be seen. :)

Yes, I would use small dog for stats. The SRD even says you should use the small dog stats for other small canines including jackals.

I'd go with "dog" too, with the following caveat: "Why would a fox be in combat? It's just gonna run!"

The statistics presented here describe a fairly small dog of about 20 to 50 pounds in weight. They also can be used for small wild canines such as coyotes, jackals, and African wild dogs.

Combat
Dogs generally hunt in packs, chasing and exhausting prey until they can drag it down.

Skills: Dogs have a +4 racial bonus on Jump checks. *Dogs have a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks when tracking by scent.

According to Oriental Adventures, a Fox is probably just supposed to be statted out the same as a Dog (the small variety) in the Monster Manual, but with 2 points less Strength, 4 points less Constitution, and 2 points more Dexterity. This is based on the brief animal stats listed for Hengeyokai; Fox hengeyokai have Str 11, Dex 19, and Con 11 in the form of a Small fox, whereas Dog hengeyokai have Str 13, Dex 17, and Con 15 in the form of a Small dog. I would assume that a fox's Int, Wis, and Cha would be the same as a Small dog's, but possibly with slightly higher Wis or Cha.

I have a fox kaiju with nine tails I've been waiting to unleash in my Rhunaria campaign someday.....and a panther kaiju and a dire snake kaiju.......muahaha.......
