[FR] Formal titles for clerics

Dark Jezter

First Post
Hi all! In FR novels and games, I've often seen clerics referred to by titles based on which deity they serve. For Example, a cleric of Helm would be known as Watcher (Character Name). I'm currently DMing an FR campaign, and I'm trying to find out cleric titles. I'll list the ones I know right here...

Ilmater: Painbearer
Lathander: Morninglord
Selune: Silverstar
Lolth: Arachnae
Helm: Watcher
Oghma: Lorekeeper
Bane: Dreadmaster
Tempus: Battleguard
Tymora: Luckbringer
Mask: Demarch
Talos: Stormlord
Deneir: Glyphscribe

Now, what are some other ones?

Have you consulted Faiths & Pantheons for this? You may also want to consult the 2E "trilogy" of Forgotten Realms god books: Faiths & Avatars, Powers & Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities.

Aye, Faiths and Pantheons has (for most if not all) priest titles for all of the gods of Toril.

I saw this and had to speak up: Faiths & Pantheons does NOT have titles for priests of every god on Toril, for the simple reason that it does not have a listing for every god worshipped on Toril (let alone all of Realmspace); it doesn't even come close.

Even the old 2E "FR gods trilogy" that was Faiths & Avatars, Powers & Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities they weren't able to encompass the gods of the entire world.

What slipped through the cracks? For one thing, lots and lots of deities of specific races. Bahamut is worshipped by some good dragons, but he isn't in there. Neither is Ilsensine for the illithids, or Semuanya for the lizard folk, or the Great Mother and Gzemnid of the beholders, etc. It goes on and on, especially considering that some of those races have entire pantheons themselves (such as the giants) that are worshipped on Toril, but did not get coverage.

And then there are the pantheons of other human cultures. There are places where humans live beyond Faerun and have entire pantheons themselves. The Enlightened Gods of Zakhara, the pantheon of Maztica, the Celestial Bureaucracy of Kara-Tur, etc.

Faiths & Pantheons is not the be-all end-all source on gods of Toril.

Well, all those books cover the deities most likely to be patron of PC clerics.

Which is why they had all those evil gods right? Gods like Cyric, Bane, Talos, Shar, Talona, Loviatar, Beshaba, Lolth, Ghaunadaur, etc.

And you should have added the caveat "on Faerun". None of the books cover deities likely to be patrons of PC clerics off of the continent of Faerun.

I'm not casting stones on any of the books themselves, they were quite good. I'm just dispelling the idea that those books had the complete list of the only deities of that entire world. Saying that god X "isn't in Faiths & Avatars so it isn't a Forgotten Realms god" is not true at all.

And I thought I was obsessed with FR.

Have you found a college or university where they let you get your degree in the topic? I've been thinking I should look into the idea.*

*No, actually, I'm not kidding. Kinda sad really.

Heh, if you thought this was obsessed, you ain't seen nothin' yet. :D

Seriously though, this seemed like a fairly easy point to get across, I thought. It didn't really require much in-depth knowledge of the setting, save that other products for it had gods that weren't mentioned in F&P; nothing that required that much setting-knowledge.

No point in my looking for a college about that now though, since I'm gearing up to graduate. Maybe a grad school for it?

It didn't need the setting-knowledge, you just happen to have it memorized and ready. Then again, by the time I get to my senior year, I'll likely be at that point too. ;)

Let me know if you happen to find one. I don't think a Doctorate would scare me that much if I took that option.
