I don't think a griffon/hippogriff is a good idea for a 5th level character, but the subterranean lizard should fit in well with the setting, particularly since the next mod involves a foray into the Underdark.

The lizard would be a good choice. If your group is not using the 3.5 Pokemount the lizard should still be much better for underground progress than a horse.

Maybe its me but i feel very sorry for any pony that has to bear a dwarf in full armor into battle.

Dire mountain lion. Or dire lion. I always wanted to play a dwarf with a dire lion, both equally hairy and maned.
